Tesoro Vaquero is en route. Thanks for all the feedback!

I made my decision last weekend and I hadn't viewed this forum since. I amazed how many people were willing to respond with helpful suggestions and information.

After much thought I decided to start with the Tesoro Vaquero for a few different reasons.

- From everything I've read it seems to be the best bang for the buck.

- I think it would best to start with a simple, yet effective machine. (If you didn't read my other thread I'm a soon-to-be brand new detectionist)

- I called Tesoro and asked to speak with a technician and one called me back right away. They were great to deal with.

- Their lifetime warranty.

The only thing that made me nervous was how cheap (low cost) it was. Even though I'm new I insist on having a serious and capable detector, and I've always believed you get what you pay for. But after reading reviews, field tests and opinions online I'm convinced the Vaquero is just simply a great value.

And BTW, I called almost every dealer in NC (from Tesoro's website) and I found one who stood head and shoulders above the rest. Not that the others were bad, but this guy was just outstanding in every way. He took his time on the phone with me, he was knowledgeable, he was prompt with his follow up and he's an enthusiastic detectionist himself. He didn't try to upsell me, he seemed to genuinely want to suggest what was right for me. He even called me back with a tracking number from Tesoro. And as a cherry on top he offered me a price that was less than anyone else had quoted, even less than I could find on Ebay for a new Vaquero. I highly recommend Mike from 'All Around Asheville.' You can find his number on Tesoro's site if you check for dealers in NC.

I'm can't wait to get started! I plan on starting this weekend. If any of you live driving distance to Fort Bragg, NC, and wouldn't mind helping a new guy I'll supply the beer!

Cheers!

my friend i run a vaquero myself and you will love how light it is and 1 9volt battery and handle harsh ground conditions ,out of 20 some odd machines i've tried i keep coming back to tesoro! if your interested i have a vid out on youtube on how to ground balance the vaq to go to travelinjavelin or type in!

Vaquero was also my choice for a first detector. After doing 3 months of re-search I found a dealer that had a used Vaquero who shipped it from Wisconsin to Nova Scotia :canadaflag: and I have not been sorry. Lots to learn and now after 7 months I am now feeling confident with interpreting the sounds and setting the controls. My latest method of searching is in minimum discrimination and holding the red pin pointing button which gives me AM (all metal) mode and when I hit a target I release the button and then assess the signal while thumbing the discrimination knob. This method enables me to use the most sensitive search mode hear all targets and quickly move to discrimination mode without having to click back to AM on the dial. Pin pointing is very accurate in discrimination mode and easy to hit targets with minimum practice using the Xing method. It taken me 8 batteries to get to this point! Have lots of fun.

Smart choice. Your only regret will be that you did not start metal detecting sooner!

Even a simple machine has a learning curve. Stay patient. Don't try to read between the lines of the instructions, just get the basics and go. Get out where the grass is short and the trash count is high. Spend the first sessions digging all targets. Learn what the trash sounds like along with the good stuff.

You can always upgrade, but you can only be a beginner once. The Vaquero will help you lay a good foundation to build a great passtime upon.

Thanks for your service to our nation, and welcome to the Tesoro family.

Patrick.

I've had one for about 3 years and although it is not my only detector, I really like it and it performs flawlessly.
You will really like the lightweight design and the placement of the controls.
They are well built machines and if it's there, they'll find it!!
Just remember when ground balancing, make sure the ground you're over is free of metal.
It is really easy to ground balance once you check to make sure you're not over metal.
Good luck with your Vaquero,
Felix
