Tesoro upgrade?

deathhare

New member
First off...new to this place. Been at XXXXXXXX awhile and found this Tesoro forum and love how it moves. :)

So to my question...
Ive had a Silver uMax now for about 3 years and have loved it. Its basic and easy to use and no nonsense. Have definitely found some great stuff and still love the thing.
Recently Ive been thinking about upgrading and taking the jump to a Cibola or even a Vaquero. Im hoping to get something with a little more control and also depth. No complaints about the current rig but thinking about even more power and control it sounds great.
Im mostly in the CW relics and do hunt some home site and parks from time to time. Love coins but really truly into CW when I can get into a good spot.

Just not sure about the cost of either. Im a teacher and so Im not rich and want to make the best buy I can. Do I really want the Vaq or will the Cibola keep up as well. Honestly I dont totally understand all their differences and also dont want anything TOO complicated.
Ive also considered the Deleon but not sure I want the ID.

What are you thoughts or suggestions?

edit: Or heck...should i stick with what i got? Can I be MORE happy with another more expensive model?

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the forum great knowledgeable people here, first I would say that if your on a tight budget buy the 10x12 concentric coil to the silver umax it beef's it up a lot, if your not on a budget I would get the Vaquero with the GB you'll love it! HHH.

no question about it.....the Vaquero will do it all... coins, relics, jewelry, and it is very deep and sensitive. You will reget it later if you don't get manual ground balance. The Cibola works well in most places but the Vaquero works well in all places. Welcome to the Tesoro forum....

I too will have to get on the Vaquero bandwagon, I think you will find the Ground Balance very helpful in the relic fields.

The vaq is the same as the cibola but with a ground balance for mineralized soil or such. To me either one will be just as good.

This is exactly what i was thinking.
Not sure I need the ground balance. At least around here I havent had much trouble. When I was in Atlanta I definitely had issues a few times with mineralized soil.
I dont know, it just seems like a lot of $ for ground balance.

Outside of Ground Balance, when and why am I gonna be happy that I got the Cibola or Vaq and not using the uMax?

Thanks a lot for your help. :)

Go with the "V" Ground Balanced machine to specific area ............ will get more depth, and also be much more stable.. You will have to learn how to GB though. A badly Gb'd machine is worse than no GB Machine.

deathhare, you've now only made two (2) posts on the Findmall Forums so most of us don't know what experiences you have had, or how knowledgeable you are about metal detectors and their control functions.

Have you used any other metal detector before, or only the Silver

I really appreciate the help here.
Im in Tennessee. Ive only used the stock coil on the uMax and its my first detector.

Over the years Ive realized with the uMax that while sometimes you get a good solid, clean tone on a deep and good targer, almost always when its a clean tone its no more than 3 or 4 inches at most. Otherwise its crumbled and who knows if its trash or a silver down there. People say these uMaxs are deep and I know that sometimes they are but more often than not, the uMax gives broken signals for stuff that is deeper than 3 or 4. Even on keeper targets. And Im talking about coins. Not larger things like buckles. I mean I found a US buckle at 10 or so inches and the detector was screaming. Large target, that makes sense. If it had been a coin, the detector would have given a very broken signal at best...even at 6 inches.
One thing i was hoping from a more powerful, expensive detector would be that it could give me solid signals for items that are deeper. I dont want to dig every broken signal. I know we gotta dig to get the goods but every single one of us wants to dig less wasted holes. Thats why we research detectors and try to get the best tool we can for our budget, right?
So yeah, I just want something that can go deeper because I know for a fact that the uMax cant give me solid signals on deep stuff. Maybe no detector can 100% of the time...that makes sense. But if another detector can give me it a lot more often, then Im willing to upgrade.

Hope that made sense. I just dont wanna get out there with a new, expensive one and find Im in the exact same boat. :detecting:

Monte covered it very well. I'd just like to add that when given the choice, a detector with manual ground balance in IMHO is never a liability whereas the preset models can be, in some soils. Ground balancing is quite easy once you get a handle on it so that's no reason to shy away from it. My two bits.

10 - 4 on the Vaquero , if I wanted an auxilary machine in VLF it would be tempting to hunt for the Right Deal & Try this Here ~
