Tesoro Tiger Shark Falsing

dryflycaster

New member
I am operating my Tiger Shark in Fresh Water, belt mounted at waist level using Motion Disc. No matter how I have the ground balance set nor if I am using the Normal or Salt setting I get a lot of falsing. This occurs while wading and the detector is only partially submerged. Almost every time a wave hits the detector it will false. When the detector is completely submerged or is elevated above the water line the falsing is then minimal and not bothersome. I have applied grease to all of the connections and to the cover multiple times and there are no apparent leaks present, but I have not been able to eliminate the falsing.

One of my hunting partners is also using a Tiger Shark and his experiences seem to be quite similar.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and the remedy?

From what I have read, the falsing at the water line is normal, and has something to do with the coil conector at the control box. I have over a thousand hours on my Tiger and never experienced this falsing problem......but mine is about ten years old (bought new 2001). So I don't know whether this is a new detector problem or not, but have understood from other posts that you just have to deal with it. Good luck & HH.

Thanks for the reply.

At the present time Tesoro has all sorts of problems with the connector on the end of the loop cable that results in internal conductor breakage. Another falsing issue I have is that if you were to gently rock the connector back and forth near the control housing you also get the same falsing indication. My best guess on this is that the rocking motion even though it is ever so slight is causing the contacts to make and break their circuit connection within the connector.

I have been thinking about removing the control housing and the cable connectors and hard wiring the cable using a waterproof bulkhead connector in the detector housing. I believe that that is how the shark predecessors were wired. If that happens it will not be until sometime this winter. There are still hunts to take before the snow flies and the ponds ice up here in northern NY.

I've never had the problem with my TS. Have you tried dropping the sensitivity setting down just a smidgeon?

According to Casey at Tesoro: This issue is about resoved, so.........if you wait till winter, you could have a 'factory' fix for your connector problem.

Yes. If I remember correctly you must do that with an internal control and I did try that last year and it didn't seem to help.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you for the info.

I talked with Vince about three or four weeks ago and he said basically the same thing. I did a make shift repair on the broken conductors in the cable using crimp connectors and multiple water tight shrink sleeves. The same type sleeves used in the nuclear safety shutdown systems. That part of the cable/connector, though it's a bit bulky from all of the sleeving, is functioning OK now.

But I still plan to send it in for an official repair when they are ready.

That waterline falsing is a pain in the butt, but I managed to find 8 gold rings this summer with mine. Dry or deep, it can't be beat, but waist-level wading, it sucks....
