Hello, I've heard great things about Tesoro but don't know much about them. Someone wants to trade their's for my 15" wot coil from my Etrac. I'm asking $150 for the coil, $290 new. Does that sound like a decent deal for the Umax?? Thanks fellas.
The Silver uMax is one of the best Tesoro's in my opinion. Its the only one that you can really hear the tone changes in relation to the target from what I've witnessed.
Depends on the condition of the Silver, and remember no lifetime warranty to any new owners,so if something were to happen to the Silver your stuck with a repair bill.Do you need another machine or do you need the cash more?As far as the Silver goes they are great machines as in my opinion any Tesoro is a good machine.

Right the Silver does have great tone quality...........but the Outlaw does as well and it has a ground balance for those users who have bad ground. It's a little deeper as well.
Do you know what kind of depth on average one may get? Obviously soil conditions, EMI, trash density, etc all play a role too. Can you get a silver dime at 6". Is there any way to tell approx depth of a target by sound since there is no depth meter? The gentleman that is trading lives about 30 minutes from me so I can at least test it. I can always use cash but wouldn't mind having a decent backup machine. My concern was that the Umax was equivalent to a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. I just don't know anything about Tesoro. But I know a lot of guys kill it with those machines.
It sounds like a very good trade if the Silver is in nice shape. It has good depth with the 8 inch coil and I have dug silver dimes at 5 to 6 inches with the small 5.75" coil on my Silver.
My first trip out with my Silver netted me a nice 1969 10k class ring off a sports field. I would certainly consider the trade, it is a very good detector.
The silver Umax was my very first detector. I found tons of goodies with that detector, and a coin magnet....yep it is. Turn on, set it up and go. Very simple to operate, and a surpising amount of information to be gleaned if you really listen and learn it.
Somedays simple is where it's at...and while I no longer have my silver, I do still have a Vaquero...and I still use it. If I was you I'd jump on that trade...long as it has been well cared for.

I have to disagree with Tabman, and I dont disagree with much of anything he says about Tesoros!
I have relatively moderate ground, but it can get a little noisy in places, and the Silver uMax went just as deep as the Outlaw in it. In the field and in my coin garden the Silver went just as deep. Maybe in more mineralized ground the Outlaw will punch a bit deeper, I cant say. I traded my Outlaw for this very reason (but kept the big and little coils for the Silver uMax!) -- my Silver was doing an equally fine job in my neck of the woods and a heck of a lot easier to set up and use. Still the best detector Ive used in my brief time at this hobby.
150$ seems like a good deal for a nice-conditioned Silver uMax. You'd need to send it in for a check-up twice in order to reach the cost of a new one. Id say go for it.

With the caveat that this is in my SW Idaho urban soil, I can get a good, clean, repeatable from every angle, round, "this is a coin" signal on a silver dime that has been buried 6 inches underground for a year. I get this signal with the Silver uMax's 8 inch donut coil roughly 1.5 inches from the dirt. That's a clean no-doubt dig it signal at 7.5 inches. Ive posted these results on Youtube (search mojotrout) and have a spreadsheet posted here somewhere. Again, my dirt and my swing speed, results may vary.
Knowing your max depth in your soil will allow you to estimate target depth by raising the coil an inch at a time while sweeping the target. In my case, if I got a good signal and could raise the coil 3 inches from the ground before it disappeared, Id estimate that a coin-sized target is about 3-4 inches down.
Haha when I search Tesoro Silver uMax your video is first on the list. I watched it before you even replied. Looks impressive. I was thinking it might make a good woods hunting machine since I'm sure it would be lighter than my Etrac. I'm not worried as much about digging holes in the woods but in the parks and private property I prefer to have a good idea as to how deep I have to go. I'm going to watch some more videos.

Very interesting. Especially the video. If you use headphones with the Umax do you need a pair that has audio controls on the headphones? Or is there an audio control on the detector that will adjust the phones too?

There's no volume control on the speaker. As for headphones, no you don't *need* a pair with volume control, but if you value your hearing, some sort of control is recommended, either on the headphone itself or by using a plug-in inline control between the brain box and the headphones. I use Walkman-type headphones instead of the big heavy muff-type and just move them back off my ears a bit so I can still hear all the signals (even the small ones) without my eardrums getting blasted.
I love my Silver Umax. I started hunting ghost town sites and ended up getting a machine with ground balance. Honestly the I found I did not really need the ground balance as the Silver Umax works just fine at those sites and I love its simplicity. It runs fast and deep and is an easy machine to use.
I got some Killer B headphones I use. The volume control is great. Radio Shack sells inline volume controls you can use with ear buds. I do love the ear buds as backups and on hot days when I wear a big floppy hat.
