Tesoro Silver Umax & 10 x 12 Coil Question

OhioMike

I'm joining the Tesoro ranks with a new Silver Umax on the way. I wanted something lightweight that I could swing longer. Tried my hunting buddy's Compadre and it's a neat little detector. Really ranks high on the fun factor scale. Plan on using the Silver mainly as coin/jewelry machine. I also would like to use it in my plowed fields. My question is if I want to use the 10 x 12 concentric coil do I need to send it in to Tesoro to be calibrated? While I'm asking, same question about the Cleansweep coil. It looks like it would be great on soccer fields. It's due to be delivered Friday. Can hardly wait to hit some fields with it. Mike

Mike, My experiences with the Silver

I love mine! Let us know how you like it. I agree with Joe. Get the 5.75 coil first for those trashy spots. The stock 8'' works well enough for most use.

Thanks for the info guys. Yep, definitely want to get the 5.75. I've used small coils on other machines and their great. I was thinking of using the 10 x 12 in my open farm fields. Wasn't sure if it had to be matched to the detector. I see where Kellyco has some SEF coils available for Umax & Cibola/Vaquero units that looking interesting. Mike

I have the 10x12 and the CleanSweep and both work GREAT on the Silver uMax. Both can usually handle MAX boost. The 10x12 is deeper than you think, I would feel like an idiot saying on open forum just how deep. The CSC is my favorite and once you get used to it, I see little if any need for the 5.75, though it is great, but the stock donut will suffice in trash. Tried both coils on Cortes and Silver Sabre uMax and both work better on Silver uMax.

Diggler is correct, conditions allowing the Silver/10 x 12 combo is the deepest I've used on land - deeper than my Etrac! Doesn't miss much.

Diggler, werewolf you guys got me pumped about the 10 x 12 coil. My soil is mild so it should be ok. I want to use it on my farmland. When I arrowhead hunt I've found almost all of the hills and crests near the creek have some flint chips of hunting parties. So I'm thinking if the prehistorics liked high ground near water maybe passing through colonial period people may have had temporary camps as well. The 10 x 12 extra depth and coverage sounds like the ticket trying to find areas of activity. Mike

I agree with all above.

The 10 x12 coil works great with the Silver uMax without sending it back to Tesoro to be calibrated.
Best in open areas.

Does get a bit heavy.
I just change arms.

Good Hunting!

Denny

I may throw my 10x12 on my silver tonight and take it out to the fields this weekend with me to give it a test run. I tried using it in a park one time....for about 10 minutes....holy cow man...no fun in trashy areas for sure...almost unusable. I haven't had it out in the fields relic hunting yet, so I will give it a try this weekend and let you know how it does.

LittleJohn, I'd be very interested in hearing your report. The Silver with some extra coils seems like an extremely versatile machine. I like mine. Mike

Been using a 10x12 on my Vaquero for about the last 1 1/2 months.
Bought a slightly used one from another MD'er who found relic hunting in the woods was not working for him with this big coil.
Maneuverability issues.

Pinpointing was not easy till I watched a few videos and started to pinpoint off the front of the coil...now it is becoming second nature.

Long wide scanning field...You don't miss much with this!

I have a local sports/baseball/football park right next door to my home so it is my go-to place when I just want to swing and don't want to go far.
I have been hitting areas I have hit over and over with the standard coil and also with a standard concentric on an F2.
Got all the clad and other good targets that could have been found...I thought!
I was wrong! Still more coming out of the ground!
Amazing!

Several sites I hunt are large areas, parks, ball fields, etc.
Nothing beats this thing for covering areas like this.
I no longer get the feeling I missed something after using this coil.
I still might be missing some targets, but I don't get the feeling that I am, anymore!

Weight does not seem to be an issue for me, I can swing this thing all day and the balance is good.
As a matter of fact, the larger coil seems easier to keep level while swinging and I can swing in wider sweeps with no "arcing" on the end of the swings.

The only downside is that it is harder to tell the difference between pop tops and coin signals, and one particular park I have just started hitting seems to have these things every 3 inches.
I had to clean out a 1 foot square area just to get some clear ground to ground balance, and I dug up 10 of these stupid things in just that small area!
A sniper coil would probably be better for this site, but I am a dig it all kind of guy anyway so I just deal with it.

Otherwise, this coil is going to be staying on my Vaq as my prime coil for the foreseeable future cause I just love this thing!

OK took the silver and the 10x12 along this morning. We were doing some testing with our v3i's and F75 on a quarter, freshly buried. Whe we got down to 9 inches, I went and got the silver, and I was able to pick up the quarter at 9inches. It was a faint but solid signal, but you had to sweep slow and "scrub" the surface to be able to pick it up good. I would say you could definitely have some fun with this setup when relic hunting, once you figure out where you can run your disc without digging "too much" iron.

Thanks for your report LittleJohn. Sounds good. Mike

Thanks for posting results. How high were you able to run the sensitivity? 9" on a quarter is pretty good, but I figured you would get a little better. What is the soil like in your part of the country?

Where we did the test the soil is actually pretty decent, a milder sandy black loam. I had the sensitivity all the way up, I would have like to take it out into the relic fields but it was a muddy muck today so I didn't take it into the fields with me. I have an old farm that I will be hunting soon(in the fields) and I will spend a couple hours swinging the silver with the 10x12. It is a lot lighter than the unit I am currently using....and surprisingly...almost as deep...ya can't beat the silver, if the soil conditions are right....it can hold it's own with most machines. The struggle begins when you encounter highly mineralized soil. But...dollar for dollar the best deal on the market...just my opinion.
