Tesoro Silver snags probable meteorites in my front lawn!

Darkflight

I kid you not...It is the process of being authenticated & I am in contact with an expert for advice. It looks promising but a verified meteorite has not been found in this area in a very very long time. The sad news is I rent the property & I am not technically the owner-by established law or so I'm told.

Here's the story.

I bought a BH Pioneer 505. It was not what I had called about but the salesman said for my area, mineralized ground etc...it would be a good choice. Don't get me wrong-it is a good machine for coins now. That is after I adjusted the pots so it could tell a zincoln from a copper. But the depth was limited & in trashy ground it was very confusing. Also, I tore a tendon in my right-swingin-arm. So I also wanted a lighter unit for the Fields.

I settled on the Silver U-max & also ordered a coil from our local Tesoro dealer. I have not gotten the 10X12 coil yet. 1st day I got it I decided to try it in my yard as to not appear too foolish using it in public.

I went through my front lawn gate. 10 minutes later I was holding the smaller of the 2 . I was stunned of course. I thought it had been trucked in with the gravel layer under the lawn. I tested it as best I could. I work with metal & have a small machine shop-so I'm familiar with the stuff. This is unlike anything I'd seen in person. The salesman for my Tesoro showed me a verified meteorite not 2 hours earlier. His was one of nearly 100 he thought might be candidates. That was the only one. I woulda chucked it-very light etc... But it was aprox 50% metal/stone matrix that was revealed when cut. What are the odds I would find one so soon while looking for pennies or such on my lawn.

So next day I went back & found-a second piece & it mates!!!. There is one edge that mated & didn't erode as much in flight. I could barely believe it.Thinking back-a year after I moved here I was at my desk-gorgeous day outside my window-when I heard a loud explosion & saw a flash in the sky. I went outside & so did a few neighbors.I figured clever teenagers with fireworks & left it at that. Later I also noticed a broken branch in a pine tree in my yard-high up & beyond reach. I didn't know what cuased it & just pulled the broken branch down. It may have been hit IMHO but the person I talked to said the stones were too small to cause that much damage in "Darkflight" ,200-400 MPH if I remember correct.

Of course I've just about ruined my lawn looking for more. Note the pile of "stuff" in the 10X12 ft front section I found the rocks in. The whole area was a hot spot & there are even mineralized regular rocks mixed in.

But here's where I am really really impressed. The Tesoro screamed DIG ME on those 2 stones. My other detector was utterly confused by all the junk. I went way overboard of course digging out every scrap of metal in the fall area . But I was impressed.I tune airguns as a hobby & there are more than a few pellets in my lawn from using daisy heads as targets. I was digging up pellets & even scraps of wire if I let the Tesoro lead me that far. Part newby of course but I'm learning. When she speaks, she does so in one tone. I'm learning the suttle diffrences, crackling & brightness of the tone tell you a lot.

The Tesoro is just what I wanted. A field sweeper that will get you good targets fast even in trash. My BH is a great coinmachine . I set discriminate just above zinc & then hit auto-notch. Still has good depth with a very high coin to trash ratrio. But easily confused. And totally blind to my rocks at that setting.

I like the old school quality & easy to use settings. Can't wait to try the new coil & see if I can find some more of these awsome little rocks.

Cheers!

I agree-recently changed to tesoro machines -LST and Vaq-when that dig tone sounds you better listen have hit some small targets at very good depths.haven't unearthed any thing like you yet but am headed to Az soon and will give both machines a thorough workout.hope your rocks prove to be real thing

A couple of weeks ago i found one in my backyard using my Vaquero. It was 7-8'' down and is heavy for is size and stick like glue to a magnet.

That sure looks like a possible...
I was out in an open field area-scanning with my eyes & searching-I figured there has to be a few more somewhere right?. Anyhow this is an area I've dragged my BH over. I got a faint target that sounde a hair diffrent & didn't blank out when I dialed up the discrimination. I started with a 5" deep plug & it was below that>I kept going as I like a challenge right?. Long story short-a .22 caliber lead bullet. Just the lead portion, smaller than an eraser!. I dug it from a measured 7". I know now why they say I'll need a shovel with the 10X12 coil...

So depth is no longer an issue, thats for sure.

If you want this is the place I contacted to verify my specimens. Worth a try.

Good luck hunting & thanks for the replies.

Hopes are dashed...Sigh.

Spoke to the expert today. What I have is manganese from a smelt process during the war. The crust is how they weather & he said they see them all the time. There is one in the process of verification so Oregon is going to have its 1st new meteorite in 30 years.Lucky guy.At least I don't have to argue over ownership & I can go back to looking for coins & such.

Also, got my new coil so the day is not a total loss...

Cheers!

As far as what is found in your landlords yard - well, discretion is the better part of valor.
