Tesoro Silver Sabre 11 headphone socket problem....

Mega

New member
Would like some help or advice on a small problem that i have with my Silver Sabre 11,what has happened this was the only time that i have ever lent a detector out and it came back working but i guess they have pulled the headphone socket and broken the plastic thread that holds it tight onto the control panel face.

These headphone socket are dirt cheap to buy and i have brand new spare ones that i am planning on using,i phoned up Tesoro asking if i could buy one but the answer was 'NO' but they could fix it for me but of course at a premium price, even sending it into the UK main service centre would cost a massive amount and just is not a viable option, its not the case that one cannot afford it but paying a massive amount for something that i can do myself that only cost pennies to buy.

But the problem that i have is i cannot work out what terminals that i need to use on the new socket as although its basically the same item and does the same job one is decades old and the newer one has the current universal design as in all other headphone sockets.

The wiring on the the Silver Sabre has 2 white wire and one black one,so could anyone help me on what wires go onto what terminals of the new socket please, its the new universal 6 connector type that has 2 rows 3 connects, alas i cannot upload a picture of the new headphone socket up but for identification purposes and help which terminal too solder the wires. If i lay the new headphone socket down on my bench with the headphone open end to the right the end that you would put the headphone jack into.

Would anyone be able to help guide me on which of the 2 white wires and the black wires goes onto which terminals please, just hope that i have made sense of what i am trying to do.

I can do basic electronic work with soldering irons etc and small repairs but just not sure which wire goes onto which of the 6 terminals i have on the new socket.

Many thanks

I made a wiring diagram.
Remember Tesoro uses a jack that switches the speaker and headphones on/off. Not your standard stereo jack. It's a switching jack.
The diagram shows how one of my Tesoros was connected. Sometimes they use different colored wires in other models. You should be able to figure
out which wires go where.

Make sure you use a plastic threaded jack with plastic nut. As you are not grounding the jack to any control box as with a metal threaded jack.

Sven, thanks for the information, have too admit i still cannot related that to my new socket,i can grasp what you mean about th speaker cut out etc and yes it does have 3 wires but still not the wiser in what terminal to attach the wires on the new socket. But i will try having a look tomorrow as i am just about to go out.

Thanks for your help mate.

Infact i may just use Araldite and glue it from the inside that should be able to keep it in place, but we will see.

Thanks for your help mate.

Compare the angle on one corner of the jack in the diagram to yours and relation to the tabs.

Sven,i never use the internal speaker on the Tesoro only headphones,so would it make it a much simpler job if i was just too wire it up for headphones,i think its the facility for knocking the speaker ot that i cannot understand.

Or would that not work, all i want is plug my headphones in and switch it on,so am i right in saying it would only need 2 wires connected to the headphone socket ??

Thanks again for your help.

Just a quick update, used a Glue Gun and stuck the old original socket back in place.so everything is back too how it was.The glue gun does a very good job and holds it in place and i doubt that anyone could tell the differance.

Thanks again for your help.

Took the Tesoro SS out for a while today and it worked a treat,i cannot see that the headphone socket will come loose especially after the amount of Hot Glue that i used, also replaced both the battery connectors as the original ones had seen better days.

But for a 30 year old machine it has been given another lease of life, its the only Tesoro machine that i have owned and its a real joy too use and brings a smile to my face every time i use it.
