tesoro silver max - beeps all sound same to me

donberry

New member
new to md'ing. After much research decided on the silver umax. Got it today and took it out to a test bed I planted the other day. Using audiophone 2 headphones. Question - I am sure it is me, but all the beeps sound the same to me. I thought they would make a different tone according to the item. The silver did seem to have a slight crackle in it where the iron was plain as day, but everything else sounded the same to me.
Is it something that is barely discernible and just need to reallllllllllllly try to learn to differentiate ?
I guess I was expecting something like a higher pitch for silver etc....
thanks for any info.
Oh yea...digging in clay that has been baking in 90 degree plus for a few weeks.........funnnnnnn. Guess I need to use a knife first to cut the ground, ...
anyway, thanks for any info

Since you're learning I'd say just dig the targets that give a smooth tone in 2 directions, if you can X the target and get a good tone dig it......

Have you laid out 5 different metals and tested them? Lay out a coin, then se ehow it sounds.........then add trash to it and see how it sounds. Turn up th ediscrimination and see where they discriminate out. Targets will behave differently in the ground, but it will teach you that there are subtle differences to look for.

most junk targets will crackle, but so will good ones next to junk. If you want to really pick through the trash, a smooth tone in any direction should be worth digging.

Hi,

The Silver uMax isn't a tone machine. But the signals for various targets do differ but it takes time to learn them. Learn to adjust the discrimination knob as you check targets. I run low discrimination to find targets and then I increase discrimination to gain an idea of what the target is. Certain targets break up at a certain level of discrimination.

After you practice enough you'll begin to learn what the detector is trying to tell you.

Coins almost always give a nice small tight signal from all directions. If you get a loud signal one way and zero signal the other you can almost bet it's trash. If you reduce discrimination and see that the target is large you can almost bet it's a large piece of trash iron.

Coins and rings sound off very smoothly and the target size is very small. Nails can sound good one way but the other direction you might get a double blimp sound or a crackeled sound.

Practice and you'll get it.

The Silver uMax is one of the finest detectors made today. If you trust it and learn it, it will greatly reward you.

Hay Donberry,

This happens to new users a lot.

When I first used a Tesoro, I new right off that I had
found what I wanted to use. But I had been using
machines with displays. I got tired of the display
and used to the sound. That gave me a little basic
knowledge of tone.

You need practice. You have to learn.

After hundreds of recoveries you will be able to hunt
with much more confidence.

After thousands of targets you will get a whole lot
better.

It will be easier if you find easier digging at first to
get more recoveries under your belt.

Analog hunting is not for every one. It is very
effective if you can master it. It will also teach you
much more than you can learn with most TID
machines.

It would help if you had better headphones also.
Those you have are just cheep stereo headphones.

If you would spend about twice the amount you
spent on those cheep ones, you could have quality
metal detector headphones that you can hear clearly
with. They also have a lifetime warranty. You won't
have to shell out another forty odd bucks plus
shipping when you tear up your cheap ones.

I abused my Killer B's and pulled the cord out when
I stood on it and tried to stand up.

They had them back in my hands in six days. That
was faster than I could get a back-up set sent to
my house.

I have to have my good headphones. They really
make a difference. That's why I have two pair. I
don't want to be without again.

Good luck with your Silver,

I love mine,:inlove:

thanks for all the info. I had planted some new grass in my backyard so have been watering it every day(3 times a day) so it is easy to dig there. Went out for about half hour before dark and am now 27 cents richer anyway lol.
Great info you gave guys, thanks

Put the time in it to learn and you will be rewarded, dig everything at first, then you will learn what the machine is telling you. After you put 20 or 30 hours on it you will be amazed at how you can tell good targets from junk. Also like tabdog says get some good headphones, I use the killer b's.

A few days ago I sold some small gold rings that I had found-I thought I'd get about $30-40 for them-they were so thin and tiny and had 10K on them. When the lady handed me $130 I almost fell out! So I'll tell you the best advice I know-turn the disc down to minimum and retrieve(I don't use the DIG word anymore). I'm now searching the house for some I've just been throwing in trays for a rainy day. I've got my apron ready for the next hunt to put trash in. If Tabdog didn't already have his name! I guess I'll change mine to Digitab- Digi for digitalis that I'll probably be taking when I expect to find a tab and it's another gold ring. I guess you might say I'm on a little high, now.:hot:

I felt like you at first when I'd read about different tones. Well, as others have written they are there - BUT it will take time for you to appreciate them as they are often quite subtle. Another trick you might try is set your Silver to accept pennies, dimes and quarters, then put the switch in all metal. Each time you get a hit, switch back to the discrimination mode and if you still get a solid hit in both directions, dig. 98% of the time it will be a coin. Or set it low enough to accept nickels and therefore most gold jewelry and do the same, but turn up the discrimination when checking to see if you lose the target. At this point you can miss nickels and gold if you don't dig. Unfortunately at this point you'll also dig a lot of tabs and foil etc., but you will get to know your machines language quite well with time. Have fun, but beware! This hobby can be very addicting.

It takes time, but you will get much better at IDing the target by the sound. I

I've gotten a lot better at it but I've still got a long way to go.

Force yourself to make a mental note of the sound before you dig and note what you dig afterwards compared to the sound.

Try to guess what the item is before you dig.

Happy hunting!
