Tesoro Sidewinder uMax

Hi all I am going to be 100% Tesoro again. To make a long story short, I bought a used Compadre & had to sent it in to Tesoro to check out. Have never used it yet should be here first of the week. Had a Silver uMax and loved it but for some strange reason I wanted to try something different so I sold the Silver uMax and bought a Fisher F2, actually not a bad machine but not a Tesoro either. I just love Tesoro's so I put my F2 up for sale and imediately sold it. I went on the forums and found a Tesoro Sidewinder uMax for sale for $150.00 delievered so I bought it. I probably should of put another $90.00 with the $150.00 and got another new Silver uMax but $$$ is really tight with me at this point. Not sure how old the Sidewinder uMax is but hope it performs as well as the Silver uMax does in my ground. Hard to find much info on the Sidewinder, not looking for a depth demon but hope it will be ok in the depth department. Thanks! Steve.

Fairly good depth and is a coin sniffing machine and hits well on non ferrous targets.
Great in trashy areas with a small coil or a bigger coil in not so trashy areas. For small
Jewelery hunting use minimum disc and dig the small subtle repeatable signals.
You will love this little beast. Good Luck and H TH'ing!!!

I think you may like the Side Windre if it is

on OK condition.

It opperates at 12 kHz unlike the 10kHz of the S uMax.

It has a threashold based all metal unlike the S uMax.

Good Luck,

Once Tesoro started the uMax line, there was a separation from the conventional type detectors. Most manufacturers have gone the route of monoplaner computer controlled settings. They have tried to make it easier for detectorists to just push a button for predetermined settings. My feeling is that I want to control that setting, no matter how minute. Knobs allow you to reach those ares between presets. Sounds are more accurate than displays.

I have always thought that TID detectors are good for newbies, but if you are a serious detectorist, on the field often and for a long time, and are in it for the long haul, then sound is the way to go, unless your TID is beyond the presets and the visuals are giving you more info like the Minelab SE. Look at the really serious detectors like the Minelab GPX-4000. Sound. Though I have a Deleon, I rarely use the TID, my wife does. My new Compadre, that I figured she could use, is now my best friend for detecting.

The Sidewinder is from the same family and the Bandido I and II, which I believe were superior for their time and still hold their own today against anything made.

I think that I did really good, the guy ended up selling it to me for $115.00 delivered. Steve.

No GB. If you change coils to get 100% out of it you'll have to send it in to tesoro for tuning.(GB) I had one and sold it to a friend for his wife. She put a Troy 7 inch on it, sent it to Tesoro for a tune up and has been spanking us ever since! I personally think it's the 12 khz that makes it hotter. You got a good one.

PS. If ya don't like it, keep me in mind!

Not necessarily, it is very easy to change the g.b. if you know what internal trimmer/pot. to adjust. I think that Tesoro has factory set their detectors at a happy medium - works well in most area's of the country. It seems like the new Silver uMax detectors was set up for my ground based on how well it performs. Can't wait to try it out. Steve.

From what I understand something about the lenght of the windings(coil) has something to do with it. I'm sure it does have a trim pot in it.

There is a trim pot inside, it can be removed and a 3 3/4 or 10 turn pot can be put onto the face plate. Then you can ground balance very nicely. I gained about 3" when I did my Silver Sabre Plus umax..
If you mess up inside, you can throw the detector away.

Who did the modifications? How much did it cost? Will this outperform the Bandido? I thinking about having something similar done to my Troy Shadow X2. Thanks. HH>

I did it all myself. Eventually all knobs did match. And changed the orig trim pot I used for GB to a 10 turn, otherwise tuning was very touchy. Sold it, should have kept it. Kind of a baby Tejon.

Here's my post from another forum:
This was my detector that I modded. It was an Silver Sabre Plus Umax.
I did have a post here detailing what I did. I don't have the original wiring diagram anymore but, it wasn't that hard. The ground balance knob was a 10 turn. Added a second disc. pot and wired a second toggle switch to switch just switched disc. from one pot to the other disc. pot. The 1-2 disc toggle was wired into the all metal/disc. toggle. The other toggle was wired into the pinpoint button. On the stock unit the pinpoint switch would switch to all metal mode for pinpointing. So the toggle was wired so it would switch it and hold that postion.
I really did not make any changes to the circut board, just added a few bells and whistles with extra wires, switches and pots.

It was a real tight fit inside the housing, so extra care was needed in routing wires......

The decal used on the housing was made using Adobe Photoshop. I then took it to my local Kinko's had had them make me a decal.

The machine worked great. I was able to fine tune out hot rocks. There are areas down here in Ga that are loaded with them.

..........................................A definite improvement on depth 1-3" depending upon item.
Extremely deep in all metal, silver dime at 12", just makes a chirp.

It finds stuff, amongst all the pull tabs dug found a 14kt gold butterfly ring.

Great job Sven, alot of people get alittle touchy about opening up a detector. I say hey its mine, if I want to monkey with it/adjust it/mod. it/ change this or that/ I will because I can. If I goof up it is my loss. Again very nice work on your mods.! Steve.

Hi the Sidewinder just arrived, I took it out in my yard for a little air testing. I really like the tone, it is different than any Tesoro I have ever had nice and mellow easy on the ears. This little jewel is really made well, even the lower rod is metal. Looks really good, now I am on my way to give it a try in the park, will let you know how it does. Thanks! Steve.

Just got back from the park, found some clad coins and a bracelet. Although the bracelet wasn't deep it hit really hard. I am really going to like this little Sidewinder, I like how the tone goes with the target - the deeper/smaller the target the softer the sound. Seems to knock out iron well and have great sensitivity. From my understanding the Sidewinder uMax was made around 1996 - 1998, I guess that wine isn't the only thing that gets better with age Tesoro does to. Steve.
