tesoro question

i have noticed my silver umax doesn't respond very well to a target in the plug. just a sort of weak sound, not real strong like you would expect. i got a new cibola today and took it to an old house to try it out. it seems to be about like the silver .... a weak response to a coin that is in the plug. i have my disc down around foil, sensitivity is around 9 and both machines give a half a$$ed response most of the time. my 1266 will lift the headphones off your head on the same target. so what gives with the tesoro machines? why won't they hit hard like the fisher does? both tesoros have stock coils on them. one other thing i noticed with the silver it if you max the disc out it will not pick a silver quarter up.....i didn't know you could disc a silver coin out. the cibola will pick the quarter up at max disc. anyone else notice this with their tesoro machines?...............roger

Hay joe dirt,i to have noticed the soft tone to tesoros,i have also noticed with the other brand detectors,whites,fisher,etc..and especially minelabs will give a loud response, blow your ear phone off type off response when you hit a coin, that is why i hunted with a minlab all the time, because of the loud signal when hitting a coin, but i noticed with the minelab i was not getting the deeper coins on a rate that i was with the tesoro,in my area the tesoro just simply went deeper for coins. The soft coin tone is just the way tesoros electronics is designed, maybe because tesoro strives for low power consumption and weight, but i can bet the tesoro will out coin hunt any detector you have.hay dirt check into what i am going to do,sound amplifier, kellyco sells several types, that will amplify weak signals, but it will also tone down loud hits like a surface soda can,i used one in the late 80's and it worked great for increasing sound for those deep targets.Chucky.

First, the poor response to a coin in a plug, which can also occur with a coin in a hole after removing a plug. There are a couple of reasons, to include a change in the position of the coin targets relative to the coil's presentation, and change in ground/target signal.

Sometime a coin is initially shallow and after removing a plug the coin or other target might then be positioned farther from the coil. Also, it can be in a canted position (as mucn as being "on edge") and that can cause a poor response. The same applies if disturbed in the hole.

Keep in mind that your detector's circuitry is processing both he ground signal and target signal and plugging changes the relationship of how things were, and from a 'slat' texture ground to a 'lumpy' and/or 'furrow-effect' condition.

The second reason can be due to the ground balance setting.

Now, as for the Silver

Monte and a few others need to go teach college, can you strip it down some and talk in layman's terms, just the basics to start,i can't understand all that hi-tec talk. The tesoros just simply respond with a softer tone,am i wrong!.The response to a coin is almost constant from 1"to10".then it will fade to light faint signal.Chuck.

This is a great question, I have wondered te same thing for along time just never got around to ask. I have had a number of different Tesoro's and some hit hard on a coin in the plug and others don't hit as hard. Never gave it thought (and I should of) that the coin could be on edge in the plug, etc. As for Monte and the others here you can't ask for any better explanations in layman's terms always well written so even a caveman could undestand, lol. Steve.

P.S. Thanks for the reply's to this question folks I learned a great deal.

Oops I forgot to mention that the Silver uMax's that I have had hit very well on a coin in the plug.

I really do think this is a mental thing,i have the same thing happen to me with the VQ,when the target is dug,you automatically think,if it's a coin i is supposed to blow your headphones off,yes it matters how the coin is laying in the plug etc...but even if the coin is laying flat in the dirt pile,my vq will not give a loud response, like other detectors,it's just a mental thing, this is what you are expecting, tesoro detectors do not give a loud bang whether in plug, air, whatever, they just simply don't work like that, that is how i know when i have a coin, because it's not blowing my caveman outfit off!.caveman treasure hunter.

i guess i'm just so used to the blast from the fishers on a target that anything else just seems wrong. i need to get used to the tesoro's sounds and learn more about what they are telling me. i got to spend about 3 hours on the new cibola yesterday.....found that i have to have the disc set between iron and the mark above iron to read a nickel. any higher and it won't read the nickel. i tried a buffalo nickel and a jefferson nickel and the buffalo nickel dropped out first and the jefferson dropped out right about mid way between iron and the 5 cent mark on the disc dial. thanks for all of the replies to my question. ............roger

Hi there.. I think Monte is right position of coin or object in or out of hole can judge how it can sound.

Typically a coin out of the hole in the plug should be way louder. I have not had recurrent prob.
with this of coarse I use 15 -20 year old machines lol.

Is the coil concentric or not? Maybe coil has something to do with it !

hi jazdo, monte had some good points in his reply and i can understand it sounding different if the coin is on edge, but i'm talking coins flat in the plug with a couple inches of dirt on them. and both detectors have stock concentric coils on them. happy hunting........roger

One more time,i am just on the computer alot because i am waiting for a new coil to hunt a spot, dirt when you do an air test you will notice that the signal tone does not change hardly any as you move the coin back and forth with your hand, the sound stays pretty much the same, whether at 1"or 8",this is something unique about tesoro detectors, they do not give loud blast to a coin,i know were you are coming from, with the minelab and other detectors,if the coil is close to a coin it is a loud signal and varies in intensity as the coin is further away, this does not happen with my vaquero, this is what kind of thing happens when you hunt with differant detectors, you think they should all act the same, but they don't.dirt you are having a mental issue, don't worry i have it all the time, look back at skiwhiz he has an issue to,it will be alright! Chucky.

chuck101, i'll try to remember that it's only a mental issue next time i get out of my padded room to go detecting.........lol. sure hope they let me out soon.........roger

Thanks, Monte. I found several pennies at 7" w/my Silver and they were more like a hum than anything. The soft tones are a welcome thing to someone after many years of detecting. I was just wondering, though. Some detectors, like the Fisher have volume enhancers to keep the sound loud, while the Tesoroes are more signal-to -distance oriented. By that I mean that it's easier to judge the depth because the volume is more variable on signals according to their depth or orientation.

Hey Roger let me know when they are letting you out, I am about ready to go in, lol. Steve.

Hey Chuckie, the caveman statement wasn't a slam at you, I just meant that Monte & the gang does an incredible good job explaining things so your average person (like me) can understand. Over the years I have asked many questions and have always got an answer that helped no matter how simple or how complex the questions were.

I know that,i just had to be my usual smart a-- self, that monte always knows what he is talking about,he is just to smart,i think we all can pretty much say what we want now and we all know it is all good,i want to go hunting bad man!.but today is the 1st have to wait on my crazy check, might could hook you (SKIWHIZ) and roger up with some of my extra meds, for those noises you both are having out of your detectors, when i take my meds,my detector starts working great,i start finding all kinds of weird stuff.Monte always gives great answers, eveyone do not pay me much attention and everything will go good.I am trying to order a 5.75 concentric for vaquero to hunt old 1700's spot that is very trasy, can't wait to get that coil, tried to hunt it with stock 9x8,i could tell i was masking good targets.and i did understand monte he is exactly right!.:tesoro:

yer right chuck, monte is da man when it comes to detecting questions! he prolly forgot more than i'll ever know about detectors.....lol. what kinda 1700's site do you have chuck? that sounds interesting. nothing quite that old in my neck of the woods. 1820's is about the earliest here to search. had a buddy find a 1829 capped bust dime in a yard we were hunting a few years back, but most of my finds are late 1800's - early 1900's. hey chuck, just take those meds and get out there and find those walking liberty nickels and indian head dimes...lol.......roger
