Tesoro Outlaw Strikes Gold :tesoro: :usaflag:

I was going to wait until we got some rain, before taking my new Tesoro Outlaw out for its first outing, but I couldn't wait.:) I've been testing it out in the yard to see what it could do and found that it hits super hard on nickels (GOLD) and goes deep. I got to the site around 6:00 o'clock this morning so I would miss some of the heat. I pulled out the Outlaw and did a Monte power balance and headed out swinging. Right off I got a nickel (1949) and couple of wheat pennies (1957, 1945). All good signs that I'm in the right area for some silver coins. After digging some more trash, some lead bullets and another nickel, I got a solid but soft tone. I knew whatever it was, it was small and deep. I dug down around 7 inches and popped the greenest wheat penny (1936) that I've ever dug. I'm on a roll! I hit another good sounding loud target that I talked myself out of digging since the ground was rock hard and I wanting to get a bite to eat and something to drink. After my break, I headed out swinging again with a renewed energy. Somehow around 30 minutes later, I ended up over the target that I had passed up earlier. The Outlaw was screaming out loudly, dig, dig, dig. It sounded like a gold ring, but I was at a location that you wouldn't expect to find a gold ring. This was silver coin territory, not a sports field. It sounded too good to pass up a second time. I dug down around 3 inches and popped out a nice gold ring. Happy, Happy, Happy! It was getting to be around 9:30 or so and I knew it would be all down hill from here on out and the heat was beginning to rise. So I packed up headed for home.

I'm really liking my Tesoro Outlaw a lot. It can do it all. Relic, coin and jewelry. You can see all of my settings in the pictures. I started out with the discrimination set at the 9:00 o'clock position, but moved it later on in the hunt to the 'foil' position, because I was digging some really small deep targets and the ground was too hard for doing that.

Really great post and pics. What I like about this post of yours is how you let us into your "thinking" a little more...here you are at a site that was saying "silver" to you, getting hot, time is short, yet you went after that gold tone with confidence..anyway...really amazing! I was thinking about your concrete hard dirt this am, out stabbing in soft damp loam from last nights rain...figured Ol' Tabby's done for a while..wrong! Beauty work there Tab!:please:
Mud

Thanks Mud. You're going to be swinging a Tesoro before you know it. :)

Your style of detecting and a Tesoro would be a great match.

how do u power balance tabman?

Pump the coil over the ground in a metal free area briskly from a height of around 8 inches down to around 1 inch without touching the ground. While still pumping, turn the the ground balance towards the negative until you start to hear popping and crackling and then turn the discrimination back towards positive to a point where the popping and crackling just stops and no more. You're power balance. Monte can explain it better.

Pax, one other thing, you do the power balancing in the discrimination mode.

No, I'm hunting in the discrimination mode.

Tab, I really like the 5.75". It's so sensitive to the smallest items it's ridiculous. I love it in the mulch tot lots. It leaves nothing behind. I continue to find stuff that even my pinpointer has trouble picking up on. Oh ya, how is it getting along with the propointer?? Any weird interference with the Outlaw? Waiting to get mine back from Tesoro. HH

No problems with the ProPointer. The Outlaw and ProPointer love each other. :)

Unless it's a fine gold chain, I'm not all that interested in finding really small micro stuff.

The 8 inch doughnut is almost too sensitive. I have to throttle it back some to keep from digging tiny sfuff.

I agree with Tabman on digging the micro stuff. I try to avoid the tiny stuff, I dig enough trash the way it is.

Nice find. However, I see that Tesoro's dig up way too much trash for my liking.

Thanks. You don't have to dig much trash at all if gold rings aren't on the menu. If only silver coins are on the menu, you hardly ever dig any trash with a Tesoro.

I guess that's why so many people opt to hunt for silver coins over gold rings.

Another great post Tabman, that machine sounds fun, someday Ill get my hands on one :)

That is great tabman? The Outlaw is so smooth.I said months ago that this is going to be the jewelry detector. And the Outlaw is doing a good job in that department.I think the Outlaw is a great success for Tesoro.Bringing back retro no motion. The retune speed is what is doing it for the small jewelry hits.I do like the Outlaw a lot.The no motion is great for relic hunting.

Yeah, it's a smooth running machine alright. I like the way you can go really slow in the discriminate mode. It's a great all round detector. The only short coming that I've found is that the 'retune' button affects the discrimination mode. If you're aware of it, it's no big deal. Just raise the coil a few feet off the ground and push the 'retune' button or switch to all metal and then back to the discrimination mode.
