Tesoro Outlaw - Mineralized Soil - Coil Choice

Just picked up an Outlaw as a light weight, easily packable, back up machine and I'm curious if this machine reacts similar to others where a DD coil is a big improvement over concentric when operating in mineralized soil.

I live in WA, along the Columbia River, and according to my experience and talking with many manufacturers and a dealer or two my soil is highly mineralized. As an example the Garret AT Pro GB 92-94, Xterra GB 12-14, I cannot use max sensitivity on any VLF detector I've tried without falsing. In some short backyard tests I can run about 8 on the Outlaw with the stock coil and I get very little and tolerable falsing.

Besides the stock coil I also have the 4" and 10x12 concentric. If I get a widescan which size would you recommend? I live in the sticks so most my hunting are homes and old home sites and an occasional school yard, sports field, and park when we travel and camp.

hear is a link , I did a video some time back and tested a dime buried at 5" in some basalt gravel called class 5 gravel and its got a good amount of basalt & black sand , my guess is your basalt is worse, but the best coil i have found is the 7" DD the 8" is heavy and not much of an improvement. the 10x12 is better than the concentric but in disc your not going to get a dime at 6" but maybe 4 to 5 " but the two coils are and do function great in all metal in that environment hear is the link http://www.findmall.com/read.php?17,1966689

Are all 8" donuts weighted? I have an old catalog that lists the 8" weighted for streams and river use. Are the coils weighted or the covers, anyone know? thanks

Great video on showing the DD vs Concentric difference in mineralized soil, thank you. I see a 7" widescan in my future.

I'm not sure what my soil composition is, might have something to do with Vocanic Ash from Mt St Helen's, I just know that most detectors have trouble with depth in my area as compared to other areas.

Thanks again & HH

Hey Flysar, hope that Outlaw detector is treating you well. Kaolinwasher is the master of the Outlaw in mineralized soil, so he should be able to help you with settings and coils. He has a bunch of great videos posted here and on Youtube.

If I had high mineral concentrations in my soil, the 7 inch DD coil would be my go to coil. I got me one just in case my soil ever changes or I go somewhere to detect that has bad soil. It's just the right size and weight.

I've been working an old park that is next to a steel mil with the out law and the 5.75 coil.... Like detecting over a steel plate.... It's the best one I have used on this park. No old stuff but I am getting clad down to 3 and 4in. Never had any other detector do better in this park. Good hunting.

Uhhh...
If You have the Outlaw and the 3 coils that are supplied in the usual package you already have the DD coil you need.
That 5,75" is no slouch either, and it might work well in mineralized soil.

You might have a totally different selection of coils for some reason, but this is what the Outlaw usually comes with if you have the standard package.

Search Coil: 5.75" Concentric, 8" Concentric, 12x10" Widescan

He bought the Outlaw with just the 8 inch coil, not the 3 coil deal.

Well, there is no 4" coil as far as I know, and I don't see any 10X12" concentric coil available either in Tesoro's choices on their website.
Maybe there used to be or maybe even aftermarket coils could be a possibility.
I do see he says he had a 10X12 concentric from another Tesoro so maybe they do exist.
Someone is confused but it may be me.
That happens more than I would like nowadays.

As Tabman said I purchased the Outlaw by itself. I had the 4" Concentric and the 10x12 Concentric with my Bandido II, both are still available from Tesoro.

When I performed an air test the stock coil on both detectors gave better depth on coins and ring size objects than the 10x12 coil, that is why I'm going to get the 7" coil; I guess the larger coil is best used for relic hunting.

Ahh, I see them now...I stand corrected.
Epsilon not Delta coils.

Have fun with whatever you choose.
You are swinging a Tesoro...it's not like you have any other choice.
