Tesoro Golden Umax question

coinspader

Well-known member
I just started using a Golden Umax and I seem to be digging a lot of pulltabs even though I have them notched out. When I come across them in the ground they sound pretty good like a nickel, but when I get them out of the hole they are notched out. Is there something I'm not doing right? or is there some way to tell the difference between a pulltab and a good target? I have tried to adjust them out with the notch adjusting knob but they are still sounding off. Is there a difference in the sound of a pulltab and the sound of a good target?

I have an original golden sabre so this may not be the same for you and your machine. Modern tabs and nickels are very close together. I slightly adjusted my notch knob(loosened the set screw and moved the knob slightly) so I have it set exactly on a hash mark on the face of the detector. That helps because if I just barely move the knob I will lose nickels.
I still dig tabs on occasion but I can tell what they are before I dig because they are broken.

Hi,
I have both old tone and new tone Golden's...love them.
Some great info on the Golden Micro Max on this site...if you do search on the Golden it's very informative.
Just some info regarding the notch width control....

Hey thanks for the help guys, I really want to get to know this machine, I am a Tesoro fan. I have the old tone version of the Golden Umax.

coinspader...their a great little detector..I hunt with mine using no notch..just use the width control knob, set it so a sports drink tab is just in the lower tone.
Any small gold rings will give a sick duck or goose sound and the odd piece of foil.
That setting I dig everything at or above the sweet sound.
I use no disc it really affects the depth...if I do get lazy and want to dig with the notch in narrow,I turn the width control knob completely CCW and adjust it so the nickel is just sounding clear...on mine it's at 9:30 on the width control knob,it knocks out most pull taps I've found....but you will loose gold rings as well:)
This can very a little from each machine..if I want to check for zinc's switch to wide on the notch and the zinc's disappear...but so does some honker of gold rings, like the school class ones.
So as soon as you hunt with the notch on you are risking loosing that hard to find gold ring:)
Every thing I've pickup on this machine has been found here...those that have been there and done that.... know!

Cheers,
Whimp:)

Whimpster, Thanks for your advice, I'm going to try running without the notch and see if I can start recognizing the different sounds by just using the notch adjust knob. Should be fun, I love figuring out new detectors, its a challenge. :detecting:

Coinspader, I own and use the original tone Golden as well. I prefer this configuration because it keeps the tones in their proper conductive order. I too found that tabs, especially deeper tabs, give a higher tone or don’t notch out while in the ground, but disappear with the air test, after its dug. But this only happens when I use the 9x8 OOR coil. My favorite coil is the 7” WS. I have not experienced the tabs issue with this coil and the tones seem to be more distinct with this coil. Also, I have found that the 7” WS can still ID the steel bottle cap with a broken kind of clip sound. However, the 7” WS is not as deep as the larger concentric.

For best depth, use a fresh battery, as little discrimination as you can stand (after awhile that low iron grunt can get annoying in trashy places, turn the sens up until it starts to chatter, then back off till it quiets down, and I don’t like jacking up the threshold, I prefer to set it at a slight hum so that I can quickly check a target in all metal mode. Everyone will tell you that good headphones are a must as well.

You will need to play around with the notch width setting to find your preferences... this nob is THE FEATURE of this machine, IMHO. As others have indicated, it sets the notch width when using that feature, and when notch is off, it adjusts how the two middle tones hit on the small gold, nickels, and some tabs. I use it to put foil in the low grunt tone, but that will also put small gold chains and such in the low tone as well... but that’s the beauty... you can set it the way you like it.

With this machine, you can set it up so that almost all tabs and zincs disc out, but smaller gold rings like wedding bands still hit, along with nickels in the lower middle tone. I know that if you disc out the zinc and tabs you might miss the larger gold, but after awhile, you get tired of digging up those crusty zinc pennies. I ALWAYS dig the lower middle tones, it will be either a nickel, a larger piece of foil, balled up... or sometimes.... a small ring.

hihosilver thats a lot of great info, I think there is more to this detector than meets the eye, I'm going to head out and try out these described methods and see if I can tune it to my ear. Thanks very much for your input.

Coinspader, your very welcome. Even after two seasons with this machine, I still feel I have a lot to learn about this machine. Not because the Golden is complicated... it’s not, rather because I think it still has things to teach me about how it is IDing a target.

Good luck with yours as you start to get out with Spring finally upon us... I am hoping to get some time on the Golden as well, although I just bought the Mojave which I am anxious to learn.
