Tesoro Golden UMax on the way!

Finally decided to go with the Golden UMax, and I am really looking forward to getting it and learning how to use it. My son enjoys using the silver UMax, and now I have a 4 inch coil and a 12X10 coil so we can swap them out amongst our machines for different stuff and find out what works best for us.

I will be breaking it in this coming weekend on a TH trip to an old abandoned town, hope I get it figured out by the end of the day...lol. I know my boy already has the silver figured out so at least one of us will bring something home.

I think you'll enjoy it. Sounds like you have the coil options fairly well covered. If you get a chance to pick up a 7" concentric I strongly recommend it. The 4" is near surgical in nosing out goodies in heavy trash.
Enjoy,
BB

You're gonna like it, tones are the way to go. Coils I have are: 8x9, 8"DD, 7" concentric, 5.75, 3x18 cleansweep, all interchangeable with Cortes. For the Golden I like the 8x9, 3x18, and 8"DD best. Switch over to All metal mode to determine depth of a coin, deeper ones give a weaker signal in All metal. The regular Disc and the Notch can be used at the same time, so you can have 2 discrimination settings working.

I am certain that there will be a learning curve with the tones and the notch features, but I am looking forward to it. I was torn between the Golden and the Vaquero, but for the kind of hunting I do, and plan to do, I think the Golden is a better fit. I will let ya'all know how the first day out goes....hopefully it will be good.

That's good news John, I hope you enjoy the Golden... & I hope you and your son enjoy many hours hunting together, That's what I like about detecting..... it can bring family closer and what a great hobby to share with them!

Looks like it will arrive today, now if I can just get the rain to hold off for the weekend, it will be put to good use! Been doing all the readin that I can do about the adjustments on it, but most of the info is about as clear as mud. The notch adjustments are the biggest thing I would like a better understanding of. I would like to be able to notch gold rings....along with a few PT's of course, as best as possible.

The Golden and it's notch & Tone feature will help you but don't be frustrated in the beginning. but remember ... you gotta dig the pulltabs/ foil too to get the jewelry. It's just because jewelry falls in the same frequency as the Foil/pulltabs That's where the tones will help too though. Best thing to do is plant a test garden with some scrap gold jewelry and nickels along with an assortment of other coins and practice regularly and pay attention to the tones, that in conjunction with playing with the notch feature adjustment will help you understand what the Golden is telling you.

I plan to plant a test garden this weekend, hopefully that will help me start getting used to the different tones, and how it reacts to different targets. I am hoping to figure out the notch system pretty quickly, as I am sure I have walked past a few targets with the silver already due to having the discrimination on it set to mostly coins.

Scrap gold, what is that? Wish I had some, have not found gold yet. But my new Golden will be in this week as well. Looking forward to it.

Hi John

I had a Golden and loved it. I now have a Vaquero and Tejon. The best coil for it is the 5.75 Concentric or DD. Good luck and enjoy your new Golden it's a great detector!

The 5.75 is one of the coils that I dont have for it. Right now I have the 12x10, the 9x8, the 8 inch, and the 4 inch coils. What is it that makes the 5.75 such a good coil for this unit?

Hi John

For some reason the 5,75 coil just works better than any other coil I used on my Golden. The balance is perfect and the depth is almost the same as the stock 9X8. It just seems like a perfect combo. So if you get a chance to pick one up new or used give it a try and see what you think. It's one hot little coil!

Well, got mine last night. That sure does look like a toy, I had never seen or touched a Tesoro. I knew they were small, but had no real idea how small. I can't wait to really try it out.

Can anyone comment on how much depth you loose with that unit running in disc. mode, taking out iron and some tabs? I have the choices of the 3x18, 7" DD, 5.75 conc. and 4" conc. for coils. I am really interested in working with the Clean Sweep.
