Tesoro Golden Umax Improved

I wrote this as a response to another post but since no one else has heard about this, I thought I would post it as a separate thread.

Golden Umax is the best. Here is the scoop. Golden Umax is the best Audio Coinshooter Tesoro makes. I have used one and it works great. I had no problems with depth. I picked up pennies at an old Church underneath the new Gravel Parking lot. Some people have criticized it because there was not enough separation in the tones. Junk came in at the lowest tone, Nickels hit the second tone, Zinc Pennies hit the third tone, and Old Pennies, dimes, and Quarters, hit the High tone. There is actually a fifth tone in the Over Load. Shallow Cans set off the Overload, so I no longer had to dig these OH YEAH. Quarters and other Coins laying on top would not set up the Over load. I will admit the second and third tone were close but with the little time I hunted with mine, I could call out my finds before the dig and drive my Son up the wall. I usually had the Coin dug before he could figure out his display. The Umax is so much faster and more fun, I would not consider a Visual ID unit.

Unfortunately I do not have my Golden Umax right now. Tesoro responded to the criticism about the tones. My Golden Umax is being modified right now to get a more broad separation in the tones. Tesoro is charging around $50 for this modification. Right now I can not tell you that I wasted my money or spent it wisely. I should get my machine back in three days and I will do a full unbiased review. I can tell you that my Detector worked great before I sent it back just like it was, so right now I do have reservations about my decision to send it.

I do know this Mod was the major criticism of the Golden Umax and it has now been dispelled. What would you rather have, a light blinking Quarter, or your Detector yelling Quarter in your ear? As the Detector is yelling at you, you are also looking right at the spot on the ground where you need to dig. None of that, find it, look at the display, figure out what you found, find it again, pin point it, then finally dig it. Just writing this sequence irritates me.

Updates to come.

I forgot to mention that I was told all the new Golden Umax Detectors will have this more broad Tone.

THEN MY QUEST FOR A USED BEATER IS OVER AND I WILL BE FIRST IN LINE FOR A NEW GOLDEN uMAX!!!

Thanks for news!

That's great news.

You just can't go wrong with Tesoro.

American made and backed by the best warranty in the business.

This is really interesting to me. I will be checking back to see what your results are. How about a youtube demonstration? :)

THANK YOU FOR THE NEWS! I have postponed getting one for 3 years! Do you know how frustrating that could be? The only good thing is that in the process I finally settled for a Compadre and am so glad that I got it.

This is way cool information.

$50 bucks?.....I'm sending mine in for this change.

Thanks for sharing.

Now that I read your post, I'm wondering whether the older style is better than the newer style. Guess I'll have to wait for your report.

Go ahead and pull the trigger.:) You got a 50/50 chance of picking the right one.

Oh Drat....
I sent on my Golden in Early feb to get a tune up. They fixed/replaced my clean sweep and readjusted my golden but I'm guessing that if I want this I'll be sending it back in september....
The diablo umax is gong in next month for a tune up...

Unfortunately mine is in the Mail. I most likely will not get it until Monday or Tuesday of next week. Review may have to wait until I get off work to really put it to the test.

The 2 middle tones on my Golden are quite different, easy to tell them apart. And on top of that my wife keeps telling me my hearing is bad.

Don't be confused there will be no difference other than the Tones on the new machines will be spread apart a little more where they will be easier to tell apart. Like many other guys who have used these, I really did not have a problem telling them apart but the desire to have the latest and greatest was just too strong. I think the tones will hit in the same places but will be more distinctive and easier to tell apart. In fact I would be a little disappointed if the tones moved around.

thought I'd bump this as i have one too. did you test it out or start another topic about results?

i wish i didnt read the opening post about screens and numbers and all the rest of the new gadgets i just brought one wont say what brand but wish i spent the money on another Tesoro i love my beep and dig machine love my Cibola and think a Golden or a Tejon would have been better choice!!

I've had my new Golden for about a week, and have limited time to use it so far....the two short hunts I did with it led me to beleive: a) that it hits harder on coins and goes deeper than the one I had 8 years ago, and; b) even though the tone for my favourite coins ($2 and $1 ) has changed to the mid lower tone, I seem to be able to identify them quite easily, even when they are deeper and have been there for some time. I'm looking forward to getting out more with it. HH

I was only able to afford the Tracker IV, but I can tell you that tones really do rule and save a lot of time. I can imagine with the added depth how fun that machine must be.

Now that makes me wonder if I sent my older Golden in for a "tone change", would it hit harder and deeper on coins also or is there something else different about the newer Golden other than a "tone change".

Tabman, I dont know what other changes Tesoro have made to the Golden over the years since I had my first one (traded it in on a DeLeon), but my first impressions with the new one is that it does hit harder on coins than my previous one. Apart from the tone changes, it seems to have a bit more "oomph" than the other one...it may be my imagination, but I feel that it is just more powerful. I get the same feeling with it as with the Cibola and DeLeon, both of which perform very well where I live (in Australia). My Eldorado is the quiet performer...manual ground balance and surprisingly good depth and discrimination. I also love the tone on the Eldorado. That said, my first impressions with the Golden are that it is right up there with the others, plus having the several tones and the notch discrimination. I will be going through the process of distinguishing pulltabs, as I have already noticed some differences in tonal qualities to coins, but this porocess could take some time, and can never be totally accurate. HH
