tesoro for small gold

New member
i posted a message on the detecting forum about the best detector for finding small gold jewellery & tesoro came out on top now i need to know witch tesoro is the best at the small gold.
the type of hunting i do is mostly tot lots with a bit of water hunting & a little grass hunting but next winter i hope to hit the grass sports grounds hard looking for gold i also hope to hit some fresh water lakes this summer to. so now i need to know the best detector for my needs. i was looking at the tiger shark but am unsure how it will perform in the grass so i may have to go for a cibola- vaquero or tejon. depth is not an issue hear as long as it hits small gold up to 3 to 4 inch deep also what coil would suit this type of detecting DD or concentric i was thinking DD but i"m all ears your thoughts would be appreciated.

Hay again Lazyaussie, and welcome to tha Tesoro section.

I'm tha guy with tha Compadre video.

I think the best bet is tha Tejon.

But, tha Tejon is a hot detector on steroids. Some people find it
hard to handle. But it is an all around detector that gets real good
depth. It is one of tha most sensative detectors on small gold that
Tesoro ever made. It's an awsome relic detector also. Great on
bullets and small buttons and stuff.

If you want to tone it down a little, but still stay hot on small gold,
choose tha Vaquero or Cibola. The Vaquero has manual ground
balance and the Cibola doesn't. Cibola works fine in mild to moderate
ground conditions. The vaquero will do better in more difficult soil
conditions.

Tha Tesoro Gold deticated machine is not an all around machine.
You would probably not be happy with it.

Tha water machine you were lookin at is a great fresh water machine
and can be used coin huntin and stuff. But it ain't no Tejon. It may not
be as sensative to small gold as tha Vaquero and Cibola. I'm not sure.

That's my thinkin. Hopefully someone else will add some good info to
this thread.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

A detector operating at any frequency should get a childs gold ring or a heavier gold chain bracelet at 4 inches, a ladies gold ring up to 6 inches deep. Thin gold and silver chains without a pendant don't give a decent signal beyond 2 inches, a higher frequency (14+khz) detects gold chains a little better. Most chains seem to stay entangled in the grass roots and not sink deep. My 2 cents. Jabbo

I'd suggest the Vaquero, LA, from the current lineup. It gives you a manual ground balance feature which could prove useful in the variable soils you get there in OZ.
It is as hot as the Tejon under all but the most extreme setups, and is much more stable in use at higher SENS settings.
With the smaller coil (5.75") it will sneak in around trash with the best of them and not sacrifice depth.

It doesn't have any tones, like your Ace 250, but you dig everything anyway. SO no worries, there.

Some of the earlier Tesoros that are also good are the Bandido and Eldorado uMax models, if you can find them used.

Going in to fresh water ... Tiger Shark is pretty widely recommended. I don't have one but have read about others using one as an all around detector. Tiger Shark should work just fine over the grass and tot lots, it just is a bit heavier and if you mount the box behind the arm rest for good balance, it may be slightly more difficult to get to the knobs. The sensitivity and threshold are internal adjustments so you don't have all the adjustments at your finger tips that you have with some of the land based detectors.

If your budget allows, get the Tiger Shark for water and another detector for land.

I now have a Compadre, Cibola and Tejon as part of the arsenal. If I were to pick just one of those, and the primary hunting was tot lots and sports fields I think I'd go Cibola / Vaquero. The Tejon is a deep animal and with a small coil picks things out around the trash real well but it doesn't tune down enough to get near the metal posts in the tot lots for me. The Compadre is pretty impressive, but I like the options of changing more settings and coils.

Most of my coils are concentric. My experience with the 12 x 10 DD is that it covers ground well, may not be quite as deep and does not pin point as well as the standard 9 x8 concentric. Some like the 5.75 coil as a DD, I have a 5.75 concentric that mainly stays on the Tejon and have not tried that size DD coil. The Cibola gets most of it's hunting time with the standard 9 x 8.

As soon as I read "water" I thought of the Tiger Shark. I have one and it works well in the grass etc. besides the water. Although a bit heavy, the box can be hip mounted on a belt making the coil very pleasant to swing. You might take a hard look at the Lobo Super Trac as well. Good on small gold and does a pretty good job on coins etc. as well. My two bits.

that by far, you find more gold in the water, than you do on land. More jewelry is concentrated in swimming areas than in any other outdoor area. If you really want to find gold, you should get yourself a water machine and spend a lot of your time hunting beaches. With the finds you make, you can then get yourself a second land-machine. Water machines will work equally well on land but they are heavy and bulky on land. The Tiger Shark has a great reputation for finding small gold in fresh water lakes and it works equally well on land. You can hip-mount the control box and it takes all of the weight off the pole assembly. With a cable adapter you can use many of the other Umax coils so you could equip it with the 575 coil, for example, making it a formidable jewelry machine.

You did say "small gold" so what every you decide to get you should stick to small coils. Large coils give you better coverage and better depth, but typically give less sensitivity to "small" obj sects. If you hope to find small gold items you will need to use small coils. Smaller coils give you better sensitivity to smaller objects, but you will lose some depth. Double D coils dont buy you any advantage unless you have mineralized soil conditions.

thanks all i"m slowly getting there i"m heading towards the vaquero as it"s got GB witch would help in the bad soil over here the tejon sounds a little to hot for Aussie ground & the cibola has no GB
& most of the gold i"v found at the lakes has been gettable with a land detector i"v got another water detector so i can get out deeper i just don't like it that much.
thank again for the help

it beat out gold hunting machines in the GPAA several years running, also has TR mode for getting insanly small bits. Has GB and is waterproof. Rear pole mount it and it's light out of the water. If I could ONLY have ONE machine this would be my choice.
