been looking at the deleon detector and think it will be my next machine but really would like some feed back from deleon owners as to how it performs in a trashy hunt site.
i know meters are not reliable indicators of whats under the coil. would it help in a heavy trash site to pick the good targets from the junk? or would i be better off to get a non metered machine and learn the sounds it makes over different targets. my previous experience with meters didn't impress me much. some of the reviews i read say the deleon is a pretty accurate machine at id'ing targets. so whats the scoop on the deleon? thanks........joe dirt

not sure if any machine is really all that good in trashy sites!!! I know the deleon will do a lot better with say a 5.75 coil in trash!! And my Tejon is the same way!!!! I have used both machine's in trashy conditions and it all depends on what you want to dig!! I mean you can always turn up the disc. and just dig the coins !!! Have done that several times where there was just so much trash i would literally be digging it all day long!!! And i can always go back and clean it out later!!! Put it this way i dont even take the 5.75 off of my Tejon !! It just is way to good it pinpoints great and i have pulled coins from underneath (seriously) iron !!!! Deleon is a great machine and if you want the TID i would say yes if not then go with a Tejon or Vaquero or even Cibola They are all good machines just depends on what you want !!!

Joe, I did a test in my cellar last night with the Cortes. Placed a small piece of shredded aluminum can 1/2 inch to the side and 2.5 inches above a silver dime. Thats close. With careful tight sweeps the SUM mode tone pitch, bars, and depth meter changed back and forth for the two metal targets. Discrimination setting was at minimum. These signal changes took place at the outer edges of the coil radio waves, not when coil was directly above the shallower trash piece. The ID No. did not change, showed trash number only, not helpful. With the coin taken away, the tone pitch and all the meter readings held steady for the trash piece. The 5.75 concentric coil gave a better indication that the dime was there below the scrap than did the standard coil. Now, that was only an air test. Will the target separation be more difficult when actually searching trashy sites, I don't know. Previously, I was mostly relying on the ID number when searching. But now to separate targets, I will try using all the other info the detector gives. Take this info for what it's worth. Jabbo

thanks for the great information on the trash capabilities of the id machines. i guess if i get a deleon i might want the smaller coils also. thanks for the help........joe dirt_1

I have owned both a DeLeon and Cibola, both are good detectors, Cibola is more powerful, better discrimination, less money.

Personally I find I almost never look at the meter anymore.

The meter question is really a matter of personal preference.

Meters are not perfect but they're really not worthless either.

The DeLeon is the best meter machine due to it's larger readout and lower price (lower than the Cortes).

I used the DeLeon and it worked great for me in very trashy locations finding a gold bracelet where my other machines only found trash. The meter readings are what did it.

The Tesoro TID has been put down by many but really it does all any meter system can do. That is, it gives one an idea of what might be in the ground.

With the TID you watch for number patterns. Certain items usually read a certain grouping of numbers as you swing the coil.

The signal quality, size, and meter readings all work together.
