Hi,Can anyone please help me with this machine.I can't get a steady tone no matter what I do .I have been back and forth with my seller. He works for tesoro.I sent the machine back and was told it needed recalibrating .Machine still doesn't work as it should. The seller is becoming less and less helpful.I may have to contact tesoro myself.Unless someone out ther can help me.John

Talking to Tesoro directly is probably your best bet. However, you need to give more details (description, settings used, etc.) before anyone on the forum can venture much of an opinion.

When you say he works for Tesoro, do you mean he is a dealer or an employee? Did you get a owners manual with the detector?

Hi,I bought a tesoro cortez 2 years ago.I bought it from the service manager at tesoro,he is a dealer.I have been unable to adjust the settings properly.Last year I sent it back and they recalibrated it.I took it out for the first time since it was sent back on Sunday.I can't seem to get it properly adjusted in the beginning.I have done everything the manual say's.I get beeps all over the place.I have been digging every thing I hear. Most times I start to dig a hole and it starts out at 3 inches around and 3 inches deep, eventually it is 10 inches across and 6 inches deep but I don't find anything.I have found a lot of clad quarters and a few clad dimes,I also folund 1 silver quarter.I have put at least 100 hours into searching.I have been talking to my dealer frequently and he has been very helpful ,but I still can't get it right.I don't know if it is me or the machine.I own the first cortez made .I have one of the first 1000.I was able to master that machine.I still have it and it works fine.I just wanted a newer model. If you would like to help me you can phone me at 1 718 515 0480 .My name is John Mezo I am in N.Y.I take my dog out a lot so please leave a message if I don't answer.I appreciate all the help I can get.The dealer has offered a partial refund or a replacement detector.Itold him I will give this detector one more try and then decide.I'm not sure I want to take a chance with another cortez.Thank you for your time.John

What settings are you using?

It sounds to me that your disc settings are to low.
Raise your disc setting to the half way mark between foil and nickels. Got it? Now raise it halfway between that spot and Nickels. That should cut out almost all the ground chatter trash noise that will kill a beginer on the Cortes and give you a quieter detector. Back off your sensitivity. Run it around 6 to start. Now go hunt. When you get a response you want to recover, check it out a little. Use the SUM mode over it and see how big the bars get, how many are there, and where are they. Use the bargraph as your ID to start out with. For get the numbers until you get a little comfort with it.

Good luck,
Mike

Hello.I have been trying to get the settings right.I bought it from a service manager that works at tesors's factory. He has been very helpful, but I still have problems.I sent it back last fall and they recalibrated it.I took it out for the first time since I got it back last week and it beeps all over the place.I dig up everything and many times I don't find anything.I start out digging a small hole and I have to make it bigger and still find nothing.I spoke to the seller and he offered me a partial refund or a replacement machine.I don't know if I should take the replacement or not.I really want a good detector.I own one of the first 1000 tesoro's ever made and mastered that one.I still have and it and it still works.I don't know if it's me or the machine.I am going to take this newer one out once more and then I will decide what to do.If you really want to help me,I would appreciate a phone call.I live in N.Y..My # is 718 515 0480.I am home all day and night, but I walk my dog several times. So if you get the answering machine ,please leave a message.Thank you.John

Put all of the knobs pointing straight up in the middle at the12 o'clock position. Put all of the switches in their center position. Still going crazy? Shouldn't be unless you are wearing steel toed boots, under power lines, metal is stuck between your coil and coil cover, your pinpointer has a conflict with the detector frequency (like a Vibra Probe), coil wire is loose and flapping around the coil or you hit the mother lode of coin fields.

I have a Cortes and sometimes the ground I am searching is really heavy in mineralization. What I have to do is go to another part of the park (sometimes only 10 feet away) or just to another park. When searching in All Metal mode, be sure you set your ground balance or you will have a heck of a time with it chirping and giving you poor signals. When I ground balance I don't lift real far off the ground, maybe a foot at the most. Very simple once you get the knack of it. When you get a solid signal, go 45, 90 and 180 degrees of it until you get comfortable on what you are digging. I have only had mine for a short time but feel like I am getting really good at know what is in the hole before I dig. I still get trash, but nothing like I used to.

Summer is coming soon and it is going to be hot as heck out, so I figured out a way to eliminate the headphones and go wireless. Here is a link to my video on my Cortes that I made today. Tesoro Cortes Wireless
