Tesoro Cortes

New member
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum but not new to detecting. I have owed an XLT, a DFX and still have a 5900di pro sl. Also got a Ace 250 for friends to use. I want to buy a all around detector thats lighter the my Whites and has bells and whistles while still being easy to use. I mainly hunt old home sites for older coins. Going deep is a plus. I've read good things about Tesoro's and want to try one. My thought is the Cortes as it is top of the line. It also has a display which I am used to but dont rely on. My question is, are there better machines out there for the money? The only other detector I would like would be the F75. I'm sure the Minelabs are great but I want to stay American made if possible. So, is the Cortes for me?
Thanks for your opinions,
Jim

I haven't used the Cortes, but do have a DeLeon, which is similar except for being totally a preset ground balance and a little less information on the screen. In my soil, I'm getting quite good depth, accurate IDs and have retrieved many coins to date. I really like it. According to Tesoro's ads, it has the same circuitry and depth as the Cortes, just a few less bells and whistles. I bought it to complement my MXT which is quite heavy for an old geezer like me and find that I really enjoy swinging it more even though the MXT is a very powerful detector. My two bits. The display is somewhat larger and therefore easier to read than the Cortes, by the way.

I have the Cortes but have only used for a very few minutes do to work, weather, etc. I like it but need to get some serious hours behind it first. I got a dealer demo for a very good price. I feel like in the long run it will do every thing I WANT IN A DETECTOR I have always been partial to tesoro. If I HAN'T BOUGHT THIS ONE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AND mXT

I have a Cortes, I would highly recommend trying one out first and if possible, compare it to others in the TID category. I,m not impressed with my Cortes its heavy and often inaccurate. Discrimination is slow to filter. Aside from the iffy TID, it has no advantage over my Vaquero. My opinion, there will be others so try it first.

Thanks for the opinions guys, If you search for info on the Cortes, you don't come up with much , which is kind of scary! I would really like to try a Tesoro but not at any cost. I just want the best all around detector I can afford.

Surprised me also there isn't more mentioned on the Cortes. There was some going on a bit ago and the sum mode caught my interest at the time. So I went and nabbed a new one. Funny thing is, I only used the sum mode a few times at first, and just got to not using it. I guess the sum was something I was not used to so I went along really not thinking about using it. Also, the display and labels are to small for my eyeballs. So I end up using it like a non TID machine. I don't use it as much as some of my other lighter weight non TID machines. It is due to go out for a walk soon though.

Have my Cortes over two years now, my main detector. At 3.5 lbs. it feels light, can swing it all day. Gets coins 7 inches deep and ID's them up to 6 inches with the 9x8 coil. I like having knobs and switches, makes it easy to use. The SUM mode has at least 9 tones and works good to about 5 inches deep. I find the Disc mode to be fast. The meter shows all the info in both modes, no buttons need to be pushed for depth reading, etc. Bought a CZ7a, used it only a few times, seems to be deeper but is heavier and is much slower in Disc mode, being that it is multi frequency, and they say it loves deep nails. I like the Cortes, good all-around detector.
