Tesoro Cortes or other detector

New member
I am still looking to buy my first detector..
Still haven't decided what I want to get
I haven't looked much at the tesoros because only the higher end models have VIS ID..
From reading it seems like the VIS ID is not really needed for this hobby.. but it is very appealing bell and whistle to a noob..

So hearing so many great things about the tesoros, how good is the Cortes..
What is good and bad with this machine..
What will I get from this machine that others can't do or offer..
What won't I get..
From what I see it looks like the Tesoros don't do selective notching..am I correct??
It seems that most people go with the lower models like the Vaquero , Cibola, compadre, or Silver Umax..

If I went with a non VIS ID tesoro.. it seems like the Vaquero would fit the bill. How does this machine compare to the Cortes and other non Tesoro machines.

Hey J. Give up the idea of having only one detector :) I'm new at this hobby and I just ordered my fourth detector (F75 LTD SE). There are so many great machines out there. Notice how many people here on the forums have multiple detectors. There are too many variables to pick just one ultimate machine. You are doing the right thing by posting and asking for opinions, etc. Make your best choice and go for it. Get out and get hunting. Then you can start all over again in researching your second detector, this time you'll have a solid foundation off which to work because you'll know what you like and dislike about whichever machine you have. You'll want a back-up detector for if/when your primary machine goes down OR you want to take a buddy hunting with you. Just my two cents worth. Matt

I agree with Matt. Get a detector to get the ball rolling. Right now there is for sale a Compass Coin Scanner for $260. You can't go wrong with that one, if it's in good working condition. Has a meter and tones. Great detector for that price.

The Cortes does not have an adjustable ground balance in the Discrimination mode, so depending on your soil materialization, it may or may not work well in that mode. It does have an adjustable ground balance in the All Metal mode. I would recommend a detector with a ground balance adjustment (or automatic ground tracking) in both modes, and the only Tesoro's that I'm aware of that has that is the Vaquero and Tejon.
