Tesoro Cortes or other detector

I am still looking to buy my first detector..
Still haven't decided what I want to get
I haven't looked much at the tesoros because only the higher end models have VIS ID..
From reading it seems like the VIS ID is not really needed for this hobby.. but it is very appealing bell and whistle to a noob..

So hearing so many great things about the tesoros, how good is the Cortes..
What is good and bad with this machine..
What will I get from this machine that others can't do or offer..
What won't I get..
From what I see it looks like the Tesoros don't do selective notching..am I correct??
It seems that most people go with the lower models like the Vaquero , Cibola, compadre, or Silver Umax..

If I went with a non VIS ID tesoro.. it seems like the Vaquero would fit the bill. How does this machine compare to the Cortes and other non Tesoro machines.

It sounds like your a coin hunter if you would like a notch. These two models have notch and the Golden may not have a TID screen, but has tones which can be helpfull. Personally, when I first started out I had a screen and depended to much on it. I then without a screen and learned alot and am just now looking into a screen again as an added tool. There is a lot of variables that make a screen read what it does, so I think going back to the basics was good for me. Good luck. :beers:

I will be using this for everything..
One of the uses will also be gold nugget hunting near river banks..

then you will want a vaquero, it is the do everything detector of the crew, if you want to coin hunt relic or do a little gold hunting the frequency is just high enough to make it sensitive plus have the ability to ground balance for the terrain your in, no this is not a TID machine so if your a newb your better to start this way in my opinion and get an ear for the tone it makes you become one with the machine alot better and you will not second guees as much on should i or not have dug that target, i like tones but even them can be munipulated as well and TID can make you lazy, single tone machines yes you will dig more but you will get better finds too with patience and practice, TIDs are nice to look at but i find them only to be 45 to 60 % accurate depending on make and model to but if you decide you really want a TID and your new i'd go with the deleon just as deep as the cortes just less bells and whistles

Choosing the first detector is hit or miss, they are all so different. My first Tesoro was a Vaquero, goes deep. After using it two years I sold it to a freind, he loves it. I decided I wanted a meter and tones. Bought the Cortes and love it. Then I added the Golden, love it too for the tones. During the past two years I sold a few other brand detectors, they just weren't for me. Like the rest of us, you might have to go thru several detectors before you find what you really like.

I was looking at the Deleon .. more simple design..
Why Deleon and not just get the Cortes.
what am I not going to get out of the Deleon that the Cortes can do..
Even though the display is smaller it seems it shows most of the same info..
From what I have read the Cortes isn't that difficult to use though. .. even with all the bells and whistles..
Right now I'm stuck between just getting a entry level $200 machine or going big for $700+.
It is tough cause for $100 more you get more options and a better machine..
So I keep reasoning and justifying going to the next level..
I think $700 - $800 is my limit though.. I don't see a reason or any added benifit of getting a $1100 - $1500 machine

Unless someone can talk me into one.

You might want to consider a used detector, can't lose much if you should turn around and sell it. Check out the Classified forum here.

I've been looking.. I'm a little worried about getting a machine that has issues and no warranty..

I'm assuming there wouldn't be any scammers on here though..
I would rather get a used machine on here then say ebay..

eBay is a good place to buy and sell... I've tried a bunch from eBay and ive had very good luck. there's feedback to guage the sellers.

I started detecting with TIDs then years later went to the beep n digs... I prefer a beep n dig. Even with a single tone I can guess with good accuracy what the target metal is.

I recommend the vaquero..... The cibola is great too, but you might want the vaq's Ground balance.

If you want a TID I'd look at the minelab Sovereigns ( straight shaft) or an Explorer / etrac. Excellent machines, but extremely heavy when compared to the Tesoros. Much more info with the TIDs, but do you need it? Really depends on the hunting you'll do... Tid's slowed me down.... If its not iron I'm digging it... There isn't many zincs where I'm digging

I wish I could own them all. I'm lucky enough to have 3 ;-)

Pending how much gold hunting you'll do, the Tejon has a higher frequency that will hammer gold. It also has to discriminators that you may set up as like a notch. You set your primary discriminator on the low end of the notch and your seconday on the high. When you get a hit, you can check it with your secondary discriminator, all done by the same trigger. As mentioned befor, the Vaquero is a very good all around detector and can be set up to go deep as well. Did we mention Cibola? Another nice choice if you do not want to ground balance and very capable. Personal preferance, it's hard to go wrong with Tesoro. :tesoro: :beers:

I would recommend visiting Backwoods Detectors website, and look at Richard's 5 used machines

4 are target ID models, the other is the Tejon. All are priced reasonable

Richard is a forum sponsor. I have bought used from him many times, and am always pleased with his machines

I also have a Tesoro Eldorado for sale. That is the manual ground balance model that came out in 2001. Great machines, no longer made.

the Eldorado is a great machine..... one of the older Tesoro Toltec machines are cool too . I just traded for one and it seems to be a winner. It has an analog meter instead of the digital but you can't depend on the meter alone and that is where the older Toltec shines. It has good audio and you can hear the subtle changes in the audio on different targets. A Toltec II might pop up for sale some where on one of the forums at a reasonable price.

You can also try Craigslist for used detectors. I snagged a pristine DeLeon for $250 + shipping from CA about 2 months ago. I love it. You can do a global search on Craigslist using www.craiglook.com and just don't put in your location, only WHAT you are wanting.
