Tesoro Cortes made a new man out of me

I would like to say hello to everyone on this forum and other forums. I been watching this forum for a couple of years, and its been a good place for my questions. I did not ask any question over the years because all the info is wright here just by searching for it. I want to say "THANK YOU" for all that take there time to answer the questions and take time out of there day to do so. When I first found this forum, the best answer that someone said was "The detector is only as good as the person using it". I agree 100% by this.

Here's a little about me. I have been detecting since 2006 and I can't get enough of this hobby. I have used only one brand of detector over the years and sold them all (three of them) . Yes, I regret this, but it was hard times. So this year I wanted to start new and have a fresh start with a different company of metal detector . After reading all about this company I felt at home and it felt wright. So with that said, here we go.

I purchased a Tesoro Cortes on Wednesday and it arrived on Friday. My first impression when the UPS driver handed me the box (as i almost dropped it) was this box is light, like there's nothing in there. Well I got the box inside and before I new it it was open, I was so excited. I didn't need to read the manual because I read it a hundred time on the Internet. I put it together and spent the night testing this baby out. I did some air test and checked it in my test garden that I planted three years ago. All I could say Is WOW!
My air test were very close to my past detectors and that made me feel good. I also had the same results in my test garden if not better with the Cortes.

I could go on but this is not my place and don't want to step out of bounds. THANK YOU ALL

Welcome and have fun with the Cortes.....................:tesoro:

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your Cortes

Welcome Wis, I've had my Cortes 3-4 years now and love it. Goes deep and has a lot of good features. I found the SUM mode is great to double check a deep target. SUM mode will lose a little depth over the regular Disc mode because of all the extra processing it has to do and so the fringe targets might not be heard at all in SUM mode. For ladies gold rings the Notch modes can eliminate most but not all tabs and screwcaps. If deeper tabs are a problem when in Notch mode, try adjusting Threshold counterwise.

Thank You all for the nice comments.

As soon as this iceberg of a state thaws out I can start having some fun.

I love my Cortes as well. Just got it a week or so ago and is my first detector. At 45 years old and always wanting one I am surprised it took me this long to get one! My first time detecting I think I may have found something of value. Can anyone tell me what they think this piece of metal is? I would think its gold but it is two colors silver/gold. Also, since I live in North Carolina there is an abundance of Gold around here from what I hear. The dollar coin is a 2007P Thomas Jefferson.

Is any quartz mixed in with it? Gold often has quartz binding to it.

@ Jabbo, no quartz. Does gold out of the ground come out in two colors?

All I know about gold is it's mixed with quartz sometimes, I would say it's just one bright yellow color.

I tested the piece with acid up to 22k and it didn't have any effect so I think it may be junk. I'm going to take it to a jeweler to verify before I say it's worthless.

It is VERY hard to tell from the picture. It could be pyrite. Does it chip or flake if you pry at it with a pinhead? Let us know what the jeweler says, I'm excited for you! - Terry
