Tesoro Conquistador

Hey all.....First post

There's a guy near me that's selling a Tesoro Conquistador umax. Could I get a few comments on it?
From everything I've read (which wasn't much at all) it seems like it was only out a year or so and now
is just a footnote.

Thanks all and appreciate your time.

That's a sweet little detector...got mine for 150.00.........no ground balance...but what the heck ..they work great!!!...has the frequency switch to!

I have one - very similar to the Silver Sabre umax except has a mode switch instead of pinpoint button for the all metal/pinpoint function and the frequency switch which is nice if you encounter cross talk with another machine. In my opinion it is slightly superior to the SSumax because one can switch it to all metal and leave it, if desired, rather than have to hold the pinpoint button. In fact, I replaced the pinpoint button on a SSumax with a switch for that very reason. I've been quite pleased with mine and would recommend it for anyone that wants a detector in this range. The discrimination is good, the depth is decent, the weight is typical Tesoro light, the single nine volt battery last a fair bit of time, especially with headphones and it's compatible with all the umax coils. Good machine..
My two bits,

Thanks for the replys,

So what good is the freq switch unless you're around other people and running into crosstalk?

And you say that switch is also the pinpoint switch?....so is it a 3 way toggle or what?

on the first Conquistador (no

I hate to ask this but could someone take a couple shots of the detector and show me the switch and faceplate?

What would be a fair price to pay for this detector? He states that it hasn't been used but a couple hours
and has the 9x8 white spider coil.

Thanks alot
Gary

I can tell you it is probably a more recent one if it comes with the 9X8 coil. likewise if the frequency switch is on the face plate rather than underneath. No, I didn't say the frequency switch is also the pinpoint switch, it is separate. The all metal switch can serve as a pinpoint like the push button other than you have to manually push it back to discriminate. No great advantage to the frequency switch unless as mentioned, in the case of crosstalk, or possibly may help if one encounters electrical interference. Definitely useful if you participate in competition or club hunts. I paid $195.00 shipped for mine which also included a 7" concentric coil along with the 9X8. Monte and I both have posted a liking for the 7" concentric coil on Tesoros and I use it a good deal of the time. The Conquistador umax fits right in with the SSumax, Silver umax, Cutlas II umax etc. machines performance wise and is one of the best choices in that line in my opinion. Go for it.

Okay....so I picked up the Conquistador umax

First outing as I took it directly to a ball field.

The soil here is really dry and hard but I was picking up penny's to about 5 inches and the max on depth was 6 inches on a quarter.

Found $3 in quarters $1.20 in dimes...and 11 penny's. + 1 ring with a CZ in it.

The single tone is going to take getting used to as is learning to pinpoint using the all metal.

I'm going to be taking it to another park today that also has part of some land that was owned by George Washington as a part of it.

Will keep ya updated.

Not bad for a first outing. Experiment with the discrimination knob and carefully mark where nickels fall off, tabs fall off and zinc pennies fall off and you will be able to identify the likely target fairly accurately by thumbing the knob.

So I'm learning this thing....

Never used the all metal settings for much...have had a CZ-6a...XLT and a Compass XP Pro in the past..(I miss the Compass btw)

Going back to a beep and dig has me thinking I'm spoiled and wanting more information..haha

So my woman and I head out into the park...find a worker that's building a general store log house and ask permission to look around, he states that I can go where ever I want. With that I thanked him and headed into the woods to find fame and fortune.

Between the both of us taking turns swinging the thing and digging the 30th shotgun brass...tending blisters from digging and swatting bugs....the only good things we managed were one 44 war nickle an one wheat...date tbd.

I did manage to figure out a bit about using the all metal and noticed how the signal of non coins drops sharply at the edge while coins sort of fade smoothly.

Metal Pepsi screw caps suck and pull tabs both old and new have a power over me compelling me to bring every one of them into the light of day. Maybe it has something to do with an aluminum mating ritual. (Shrug)

We found one nickle and penny out in the middle of the woods right next to a spent 22 mini mag casing.....as we walked away from finding those I said to her "that nickle was the first we dug with the machine"...she agreed and we promptly proceeded to dig 7 more and two quarters from one hole....OH the Karma on that one.

So other than not having headphones and having to deal with someones evil grandmother taunting me asking where all the gold was....it was another good day.

And tomorrow is another...(He wraps his blistered thumb and takes another aspirin)

Take care
