That may be the case for salt water - I've never used it for beach hunting, it was more of a waterproof relic hunter for me. I did some searches in fresh water rivers with it, but never salt water, so I can't speak on that topic. I love the Stingray for relic hunting, it was very easy to use, very hot on lead and brass which was perfect for civil war relic hunting.
Let me put it to you this way about how I feel about the Stingray - I sold that unit about 10 years ago while going through a divorce and custody battle because I needed money. I had a newer Tesoro Golden Sabre II at the time, so I held on to that. However, about 3 years ago, I was talking with a buddy of mine who knew the guy I sold my Stingray to. I asked him if this guy still had and if he uses it. My buddy said he never used it. I bought it back from this guy for $200 3 years ago and I'm happy as heck to have my Stingray back again. It's an awesome back up detector and it's perfect for rainy days when I'm out relic hunting. I love it.
