tersoro - ground balancing in hot virginia dirt

New member
i live in central virginia and i am having a little trouble ground balancing. getting a negative response with my tejon. i was told that the 575 widescan coil would not help me, but i have been reading some comments saying that the DD coil is great for hot soil. Has anyone had similiar problems and what can i do? i need a back up detector anyway and what would you guys and gals suggest for relic hunting.. THANKS

When I first got my Tejon years ago, their ad read "meets and defeats all soil conditions." Well, that turned out not to be true. I used it in places in the Shenandoah valley where it got no depth at all. Like not even 2" on a three ringer. I would negatively GB it, and that helped some, but the answer is a DD coil. Sees less ground. Tesoro makes a wide range of DD coils for their HOT detectors, and they do improve performance. But unfortunately no detector but a pulse will handle some soil conditions. VLF's lose a ton of depth in bad ground. ALL of them.

I can not get adjusted negative enough at the salt water beach over the wet sand with the Tejon; not even close. Have not found dirt that I can't balance to but I have not hunted Central VA. I have some coal cinder covered parking lots that give me fits; but not quite the same thing. I understand Culpepper area and nearby is some very difficult ground. If you can't get close to ground balancing with the standard 9x8 and are seeing quite a bit negative response, I kind of doubt going to the 5.75 inch coil in either version will get you all the way there. If you are just off a little, maybe you can get there with the smaller coil seeing less of the ground matrix.

I will say again that I have heard that the Vaquero has more ground balance range, but I have not used one to compare it to the Tejon so I can not personally verify it. Anyone out there who can?

An alternate / back up detector? I'd say find a club in your area and see what is working for other people dealing with your ground.

Tesoro web site lists gold star dealers in Fredericksburg, Ashland and Richmond. The Tesoro web page has contact information. They may be able to help too.

And welcome to the forum!

I have never had a problem GBing the Tejon in any dirt. The problem is that when you GB it in hot ground and everything sounds good, you get very little depth. On my farm where the ground is smokin' hot, I can run the Tejon perfectly smooth and silent. But I can't get more than 3" on a minnie ball. Lower frequency detectors work better though, including the Vaquero.

Hey people looking for others to go detecting with I have the ace 250 and pinpointer. I have done some research and would welcome any and all help finding new spots.

I also live in central Va, but most of the places I hunt have decent ground. I do encounter 'patches" of hot ground sometimes, but can usually walk my way out of them. Different farms and locations offer a solution for me.

daniel, good video and i mean that. but i was wondering what if any difference it would make on the tejons behalf if you used a dd coil. and i saw first hand myself because me and my brother found some bullets too, and he has a f 75. i could pick up most signals but i also didn't have a dd coil but a concentric coil. what i am trying to do is find the best set up for the tejon and if its not enough then maybe keep it for a back up and get something else. thanks again

You should read my comments on the DD 5.75" coil. I find the difference in performance quiet baffling when hunting in mineralized soil. It's as if you're using a different detector. To any body hunting in bad soil, I would highly recommend them the DD. The only drawback about the coil, less coverage and loss of depth on items smaller than a dime. If you hunt in All Metal mode, you'll be able to detect deeper though. Also, hunting in all metal mode with the DD in regular soil is now feasible! Its no where near as annoying as hunting with the stock coil.
