Terra X-70 Best Gold Detector?

landman

Member
Forgive my ignorance but some one who has all the minelabs posted on a yahoo forum that the Terra 70 is the best gold detector. Not knowing anything about this detector but formally owning a sovereign and Explorer how does this get high marks from someone who owns a GP4000?

from awhile back. He stated, and I agree, that the xterra 70 is a very good detector in that you can relic hunt with it in the morning, beach hunt with it at noon, hit a bunch of yards and parks with it all afternoon, and then take it on a gold nugget detecting trip as long as the nuggets weren't microscopic in size and you could probably do well. Is it THE BEST as a dedicated water/beach machine?? Probably not. Is it the BEST Gold detector on the market? Again, no. The BEST for relics, uh-uh. The BEST for parks and yards? In the top 3 currently I think.
The point is, the xterra 70 is a very good all around detector. It has a lot of the features you would like to have on a gold machine. Manual and auto tracking GB. A prospecting mode, High freq coils in different sizes for different applications etc.
If all you do is nugget hunt with a metal detector, there are probably better choices. If you like to do a few different types of hunting with a detector, ghost towns, relic, beach, yards, etc... it might be just what you are looking for. It's hugely popular right now for a reason. pick one up and try it. If it isn't your cup of tea there is a ready resale market available to you.Whatever you decide, good luck and HH. Bob.

Lets just say this, The GPX 4000 is a totally different machine (PI) and about $4000 more then the X-Terra 70. For the money I believe the XT-70 is one of the best all round metal detectors on the market today with very good prospecting abilities. I will not get into a debate over both machines but I will say this.............If I was a FULL TIME prospector and had a lazy $5000 under my pillow I would be using the GPX 4000 as my main machine with a mono coil set-up on Australian soil and for the trashy areas the 70 would take command. This is purely on the gold fields only. The X-Terra 70 was never designed to be a pure gold machine but minelab has done a bloody good job in that area considering its an all rounder. To say any machine is the best is a pretty bold statement but to have someone say to you on a personal level that they are getting the BEST out of there machine says alot more to me in many ways and I'm definitely getting the best out of my XT-70.
Cheers!

who has NEVER nugget hunted. I'd be the LAST guy you should listen to for that. I got an xterra 70 becasue I dabble in all kinds of metal detecting(except water as there is none around here). And I got it because of reading all kinds of forums to gain a feel for the opinions that are out there. Like nugget 71 said, visit some strictly gold hunting forums and see what is being used and liked the most. It's your money and you have to make the decision. Good luck and HH. Bob.

I have bit an X-Terra 70 and a Minelab SD2100 V-2. The 2100 is a better machine for finding gold, but the 70 does a darn good job. The SD2100 is for sale as I don't use it enough to justify keeping it and it's weight hurts my bad back. If anyone is interested it comes with all the goodies and I will sell it for $1350.00. It's in as new condition.

Good hunting, John K

Hi,

There is no such thing as a best gold detector. If you want the best ability for handling bad ground conditions, or the best depth on monster nuggets, get a Minelab SD/GP unit.

If you want superb small gold ability get a White's GMT or a Fisher Gold Bug 2.

If you want a unit to get gold nuggets but also have good multi-purpose discrimination, get a Minelab X-Terra 70, White's MXT, or Tesoro Lobo ST.

I'm in agreement with other comments in this thread. The best "Gold Detector" in the world is without doubt the Minelab GPX-4000

BUT the best DUAL PURPOSE detector (in my opinion) is the Minelab X-Terra 70. Dual Purpose means it can be used effectively for both coin & relics PLUS prospecting in the harshest soil types.
It's the best "all round machine" and nothing I can think of comes close.
X-Terra 70 is lightweight (incredibly so), uses new technology, takes AA Batteries with very little drain, has a range of coils (including Water Proof and High Frequency) & is VERY GOOD in highly mineralized soils typical of the Gold Fields in Australia. Most other detectors are unsuitable for prospecting in highly mineralized soils (where gold frequently occurs).

If your only desire was beach hunting or relic hunting, there's a couple of other options other than the Minelab X-Terra 70 from Whites and Tesoro. These are great machines but they don't necessarily perform as well in the highly mineralized ("Hot") soils ...typical of the goldfields... as the X-Terra 70 does.

Many GPX-4000 owners also use the X-Terra 70 as their backup detector since it's lightweight and rugged. And the 6" optional DD HF coil for the X-70 has some advantages in streams and under water that the GPX-4000 might have trouble with. My X-Terra 70 can detect a 0.02g nugget on the surface in an air test (using the 6" DD HF coil) so this was extremely surprising to many prospectors I demonstrated this to.

The lightweight and rugged design of the X-Terra 70 makes it an easy and versatile machine to use. If you bought one today, you'd get many years of use out of it before you either sold it on (they have a great resale demand) or upgraded... in which case, the X-70 would be your ideal backup should anything more powerful be announced someday down the track.

From the P.I. Forum it works in bad ground in OZ where the ML P.I. units will not ground balance.
And TY BROOKE has a very high opinion of the X-70 as a gold hunter as he is currently prospecting with one [and as a general purpose detector.]

works for me :twodetecting: xterra finds gold

Steve or no one else mentioned the auto tracking Minelab Eureka Gold with 3 frequencies and a good Disc mode ??
AND also a CoilTek 15" round DD WOT available for it as well.

Hi David,

You are right - I did not mention the Eureka. I was referring to multi-purpose units (coins, relics, nuggets, jewelry). The Eureka only has ferrous/non-ferrous discrimination. It is a nugget detector, not a multi-purpose machine like the X-Terra 70.
