Terra 70 Micro gold and species/ nimh myth busted

B.T

New member
Heres some Micro gold found with my 70 and a couple of species. The Micro stuff was found with a 6" 18.75khz DD running tracking, sens 30 and a super slow sweep speed(sloth mode).
I tried here nimh vs Alks and let the nimh batts run down to the "we've just about had the gong" mark.
I can tell you that at the near flat mark the small bit with the sort of black marks on it punched in from 2 inches down loud and clear. When it hit the coil it sounded like it was a 2 grammer. At no time could I pick any discernable difference between the batts perfomance vs each other. If it exists then it is a smidgeon of a smidgeon diff which could only be measured by a Nasa expert.
The species are a perfect example of quartz and blue/black slates and their association with gold. They have a big time love relationship as well as the olive green type which can be encountered also.
Gotta love th 70 huh!
ps: sorry about the way the pics are posted and scanned, heaps of tech hassles where I post from at the moment, lucky to get them on at all.

Wow B.T some pretty small stuff there mate! It sure is amazing what the 70 can find when in capable hands. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Cheers!

Super, BT!

The guys at the local Prospecting store laughed when I showed them a 0.02g nugget and told them the 6" DD HF coil was able to sense it. The Elliptical coil, on the other hand, just cant pick up on gold so small although it has a better chance of finding larger nuggets when you are checking new ground than the smaller 6" coil. Your specimens are ideal examples of the sensitivity of the little 6" DD coil. I found a corroded needle the other day under a rock ledge, under sand and in a flowing creek underwater and it was just a few mm long yet as thin as a human hair. That was pretty amazing. My partner groaned but I pointed out to him that bad finds like this were good because it showed the coil was performing perfectly. And beyond expectations.

Just in case readers don't realize the size difference between a 2 grammer and a 0.02 grammer...

Sometimes people say to me that small gold, like the small spots on your specimens, is a waste of time.... This is annoying because they're missing the point... What they fail to realize is that these small specimens are like beacons: They tell the Prospector that there's gold deposited right there on the ground they're currently on and to spend more time in the region carefully scanning the soil for larger samples. Prospectors missing such specimens might walk away from a spectacular find because they didn't concentrate on the area where the small gold was found. Personally, I like finding small gold for this reason and also because it's always an interesting experience.

So you were comparing the Alkaline Vs NiMH batteries... I wasn't aware of a difference of opinion although I gather that people felt the NiMH batts would perform worse when nearly exhausted. Seems they work fine all the way to the end by your experiment. Do you use a Batter Meter at all to test the remaining charge?

Good finds, BT!

After searching the AZ gold fields for years I agree completely. I could find one small picker and know there most likely more around and possibly larger nuggets as well (small Patches). If you in it to find gold your .3 to 1 grams the ( pickers) added up for me up are going to be most of your finds not 1/2 OZ nuggets. and finding that one small one is the key. Nice Finds I'm glad to see the 70 is finding such small gold. check out these little guys, Grant

I just got my small coil this last winter and can't waite for the snow to melt in our gold country. I would never have realized that the small 18.75 khz coil could find such small gold. Thanks for sharing the pics.

I will take gold any way it comes, other than being fired from a military rifle at 3000fps. But seriously there are almost inumerable reefs/hard rock loads out there where they have hardly ever been given a second look over because they never put out large gold. Machine like the 70 though will find super rich species which PI machines cant see. I often go looking for these places and with the 70 have often been rewarded. Bloke who only run/own PI machines often bag me for using the 70 and say things like "boy, wouldnt be too many places you could use that!" Truth is after owning one from the start and using it every week, bar when I broke and rebroke my toe, I am yet to run out of places to take it. A lot of the places can be very different from where you would typically take a PI but who cares. Golds gold to me. One place I found was alive with small gold up to 2 grams, with most under 1/2 gram and historically was super rich in fine gold. Its a hard to find place and in the washed out gully there are numerous slate bars cutting across it a right angles, perfect. By the looks of the place too it has never been panned since the 1800s as there are very few signs of any activity bar mine and perhaps another bloke 10 years ago, who only detected, who I know may have been in there as well. No water there yet but boy am I hanging out for some rains in that place to hit those bars. And all because of the 70 and its amazing ability to find super small gold. The pathfinder to me was a small 1/20th of a gram bit. I then worked it for 2 months, three days a week for hundreds of small bits and species as well as coins and relics.
Oh yeah the batts. The tech where I work said to me a number of weeks ago when I said I used Nimh batts "oh dont use those things they are too weak to properly run any detector, only use alks". I tried to tell him that they work just fine and that the 70 doesnt know the difference. When I told him of my trial and showed him the pics he didnt say a word. Nope, no meters, ran them flat.
