terra 50 acting up today.....

Started out at an old favorite spot I used to hunt 10 years ago and was surprised to find 2 musket balls and 1 British coat button. War of 1812. Anway When I was useing the pin point over target located target and pulled detector away and the tone was still there and would not stop untill I pressed pinpoint aqain. Checked for any metal on coil and pulled coil cover off and it was clean. Worked fine for the next few targets and did it again, this happened all day.
I like this terra 50 and find it to be a very good relic machine. One musket ball was at least 8 to 10 inches and it hit hard. It's as good or better than any of my Fisher's I used in the past. Oh and this is first time out with machine so it's new.

any help would be appreciated.
thanks Jerry from western N.Y.

Hi Jerry,

Have some info and suggestions.

It is possible that the machine is defective, but first want to make sure that you understand how the pinpoint on the X-machines work. The pinpoint does NOT work like most general purpose Fishers. That is, like a manual pinpoint that will hold at a constant threshold and can be de-tuned with a stab at the pinpoint button.

The X-machines are an auto-tune type design that will de-tune(de-sensitize) as you swing over the target, so that the sweet spot shrinks in size till you are right over the target.

But conversely if you push pinpoint and set the machine down on it's stand while you go to dig a target, the same auto-tune action will increase the sensitivity seeking a target signal with the coil basically pointed sideways. That means that in about 30 seconds or so the pinpoint can go full loudness at one of the lower tones, and will just sit there at full bore until you click the pinpoint function off, which resets it to some quieted value. If this is what is happening it is normal behavior.

Also keep in mind that the GB and ground signal level may have a bearing on what state the pinpoint circuit will be in once you pull away from the target.

Hope this helps.

Hey Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I Ground balance several times today. Soil is pretty good in that area. Can get it so quiet U can hardly here any tone as I'm bobing coil.I don't think it's ground balance. The pitch stays the same as does the inside circle on display screen. They stay exactly the same even if I raise the detector shoulder high. Remember it happens off and on. It's no big deal to reset it but I shouldn't have to as it is a new machine.
I hope to get an hour in Thursday and I will see if it still acts up.

Thanks again Jerry

Jerry, what you describe is what happens to the X30 for me. Some places I set the machine down in PP it will scream at the top of it lungs. Other places I don't get a whisper. I was told it was becuase of not being able to ground balance the X30 in our very negetive NW soil.

After being told that, I went out to two areas it happened at and sure enough in that 20'-30' area the machine sounded off when set down in PP mode. 50 feet away, it didn't make a sound when set down in any direction. It happens in certain areas here and not all of them. That's why I plan on selling the X30 after my vacation. I really like this machine and plan on a X50 if they come bring out a 4-5" coil.

Maybe when this happens try GBing it in that area and see what happens. If you hunted all day and only GBed the machine 2-3 times that may be the problem. Some soils conditions change pretty fast in certain areas. Especially places that have had fill brought in from other areas. Hope you get it figured out and let us know what you finally find out. I usually just toggle between PP and detecting mode, and it stops. Not sure what starts it, but it always stopped, and it never bothered me enought to say anything about it(meaning that once every couple of days of detecting, it would happen, so it didnt effect me much, as opposed to if it happened every time I went into PP).

J.

I had this happen several times today and it has occured before; and like Rentasquid, I switch back to detect, then PP & it works fine. And I've also had this occur with my Garrett Ace 250, and the cure is the same. Maybe that's what is referred to as detuning or retuning:confused:
