Ok, went out the toher day with a friend, and dug up a few wheats and some clad, and then during the hunt, I found this round object...it is 3-1/2" accross...the numbers and lettering are backwards....and the supossed top side has these bumps with numbers 1 through 12...now it looks like a press of some kind, so come on folks what is it...oh the Cap Grenade...I found next to our driveway 7" deep, the day we went out...just had to bring back a few memories for the baby boomers. Jack

It looks like a time date spindle for a press.
The months are numbered 1 through 12 and the year is 51 (1951). Probably used to stamp copper, lead or other soft metal.
The dimples on the other side would sit in a recess on the press end and the cog inner grooves would slide over a male spindle.
Just a guess but I could be wrong.

The little rocket used a cap, and when it hit something solid, it would discharge the cap. Haven't seen one in a long time.

its a cap gun in a way. i had one and you put in a single cap threw it in the air and when it hit the ground it will discharge. was lots of fun til i lost it.......where do you live?? lol ok i lost it in the river.

SSSOOOO many answers and yet the question still remains, the cap grenade could've most likely drifted on the bottom of the Ol' Mississippi....and then took a walk 10 miles and fell out in my front yard, most likely the die stamp was used to mark months/years, on furniture in an assembly line, but...I really would like to know, just to say I know....why couldn't I have found a merc or a standing lady and then I wouldn't have to have this problem arise...thanks guys...Jack.

Oh...I almost forgot to award the prize....SPANKY.....send me you mailing address and you're gonna get the cap grenade...WOWOWWEEEE!!!!!Now that's something to shout about....Jack

We used to make those out of two bolts and a nut with the nut in between both bolts and the head off a kitchen match stuck inside the nut between the bolts. You then threw it on the ground so the head of either bolt hit the ground and it would explode. We used to make a lot of our toys. Ever make a carbide bomb?

Its ok bud........had fun guessing :crazy::rofl:

I learned something from reading Uncle Willys reply. I'm gonna give it a try.Does it make a pop or a fizz when you put the match heads in the nut?

Sounds like a firecracker going off and blows the bolts apart so watch your eyes. You'd be surprised how much power is in the igniter on a matchhead. Be sure to screw one of the bolts down tight against the match head but don't mash it.
