guys, ive had my explore now since it came out and id say a thousand hours on the explorer under my belt. i dont use any coin patterns. i run an open screen with iron mask at 10. i feel i got my sounds down pretty well so ive stopped running in digital and im trying to stay with the smart find screen only. now ive gotten hits that have given me the same sounds as a coin like a 28 reading but noticed the crosshair on the left hand side right up against the iron masked black out and some times jumping around and sometimes nulling out.my question is. what are the chances of these targets being an acceptable target to dig?
thanks for your advice. stan sjmdc

If they sound good dig em.. I have seen coins read over there in high iron areas...

Stan, I'll tell you what I have observed. I always hunt in iron mask -8... and from what I have learned, If it sounds good... dig it. I have taken Jim's advice on this and it sure has worked out well for me. I go real slow and resweep every little signal I hear. If it repeats, I dig it, even if it may be a little scratchy or broken (look at your depth meter and dig the ones that are at least a third of the way down). If it nulls out when I resweep it , I keep walking. Also, I have dug a number of good coins that have sounded good but have stuck to the far left. No matter how hard I tried it would not move to the right. Again, if it sounds good dig it. If it's sticking to the left and sounds good it might be next to a piece of junk sitting next to a great coin. Remember...go slow. It will pay off.

Most of mine read on the left side as the areas have been hit hard with the Sovereigns and other detectors. I have said this many times to not trust the crosshairs as much as the audio.
What I do is once I get a signal i will work it and see that it is a good sounding signal and the try it from other angles and if it is repeatable from more than one angle I will dig it or if at all in doubt I will dig too. I get a few rusty nails too, but have dug any coins that showed as iron on the crosshair because it was next to a bigger piece of iron.

Has anyone out there did a digital check and dug if the target bounced from say a 28 (possible coin) to 31 (iron), actually finding a coin next iron? Thanks!

I have not had my explorer long ,but I have found that if the tone sounded good but while digging you find a nail or other small rusty piece of iron, recheck the hole as quite often there is a coin in with the nail!!! My two cents worth!!HH
