Ive seen reports of excellant depth. Is this true? Looks like a mean coinshooter. Tell me your thoughts!! Thanks

For the money expect good ID, excellent notching and a true coinshooter with medium depth( which may vary from area to area) Truly Garrett offers a nice low to midline machine at a moderate price..As a plus Garretts like gold jewelry to add to its conshooting abilities..

I can find quarters down to 7" with my Silver umax. I would hate to buy a machine twice the cost just to get one more inch.

i had a 550 before i got my 2500. i was getting wheats and dimes at and around 8 inches. i loved it! it's light and , like any machine, the longer you use it the better and deeper your finds will become.

I love Garrett machines, but if all you are looking for is more than one inch depth over your Silver Umax, you will be disappointed, because the 550 will not go that much deeper. If however you want notch discrimination and visual ID, the 550 is a good choice. You might also check out Garrett's brand new Treasure Ace 250. I haven't tried it, but it is loaded with features and getting mighty good feedback for such a low priced machine. HB

Great comments. In truth, the Umax is a good unit - I have one. The 550 is on the same par, though and adds some feature as has been noted. What you will find though is the Garrett is a much different machine to operate. Less knob fiddling than on the Tesoro and with a strikingly differnt response suite to targets. It will take some getting used to, but I doubt youll be sorry, especially if you get one used.
Then if you dont like it, sell er off and you are out less money. Go for it! and live a little

Garrett units with the exception of the GTI2500 all metal that ID's are not depth demons..For the price the 550 offers you superior ID and notch discrimination not found on other companies machines with adequate depth..If you like a unit with no ID or notch discrimination and are happy with your depth perhaps no need to change. Even here in N.E. Pa. where coins fall deep average silver dime is 5-6 inches but if you wish to get those 10 inch plus ones go for a GTI2500 or one of the other depth demons out there..

Well, I love my 550, I outhunt Gulf Hunter in clad, each time we go for a hunt. The 550 finds those coins. the pinpoint is great too. I have tried the 1500 GTA, but don't like it as much as the 550. Worth the money and the fun.
