Teknetics S/T

Old California

New member
Recent testing various size coils with the Teknetics Mark 1 sparked an old interest with the S/T, been curious since the Mark 1 air test pulled out my S/T.

Across the board both Mark 1 and S/T fared the same with all coins with the exception the S/T detected a nickel a tad deeper, maxed out sensitivity with the S/T a nickel air tested at 14-15" inches, the Mark 1 with max sens hit the buffalo at 12-13" inches.

Both remarkable machines, both two filter.

Plus, Many thanks to Tom Collins. Tom gave me the S/T several years ago, a machine I will surely take good care of.

Nice! How deep do those detectors see a penny in your soil?

Sorry for the slow reply, didn't see your until last night.

Both the Teknetics Mark 1 and S/T can get a copper penny at 8"-10" inches in my soil, sounds incredible but that was what the Mark 1 did once in a while at an old park or old school.

Now with the S/T, never dug one that deep out in the field but from a test garden it will hit a 9"-10" buried penny.

A good friend of mine used to own an S/T, he says the S/T found more silver halves of all the detectors he's ever owned. I've heard this from another S/T owner as well, the S/T was hot on silver halfs.

Thanks for asking,
Paul (Ca)

Thank for the reply. Depth is not something the modern high-end detectors have over the vintage ones. I hope a breakthrough is made some day.

tek was way ahead of everybody with the s/t this one should be brought back from the grave it's still years ahead of todays machines

Hello Harold,

The S/T has a choice of a single, two or three tone feature. They are not anything related to a Mark 1 but the tones are a pleasure to the ear. I prefer to use the 3-tone feature with the S/T, Most gold jewelry signals fall in the lowest tone range and higher conductive such as copper pennies, dimes and quarters fall in the high tone range. The target range can be tweaked from a trimmer pot inside so that higher conductive targets fall in that third tone window, Forgot which trimmer pot it was but remember doing this so that some of the bottle caps that fell in the upper tone are now in the middle tone window.

Here's a quick pic of the tone selector switch, Also has a Black Sand mode which is a 1-tone feature that switch is on the other side.

Plus, My S/T is no longer waterproof. Replaced the waterproof plug with a standard Teknetics coil plug to accept all quick release or push type Tekentics/bountyhunter coils which is fine with me prefer to use this as an inland detector instead.

I agree Greg, Would be nice to see someone come out with another S/T type unit that would be great! Not so much for water hunting but as an inland S/T type, That's what my S/T is used for not it's mainly an inland gold jewelry detector and for coin shooting.

Take care,

Do they have a modulated audio to tell deeper coins from shallower ones? Those are cool looking detectors for sure!

Hi Harold,

Sorry for the slow reply, Been meaning to respond sorry for the delay.

The audio is not modulated, But the deeper signals kind of sound at a distance. Let me take her out for a spin and see if I can tell differences from shallow to the deeper signals. They are cool looking that's for sure, Give me a few days to check the audio and I'll relay this back to you.

Thanks Harold,
Paul

Hello Harold,

Finally made time to check the audio again if one can tell deeper coins from shallow ones, The S/T is not modulated audio but on smaller finds the real smaller bits and pieces sort of give a softer tone.

Here's an impressive test on Gold jewelry, Now these are air test and to my surprise with the 10" coil the S/T hit on the tiniest of finds with ease and at great depths. Plus, Couldn't duplicate these same results with smaller coils looks like the 10" coil can be good coil for gold jewelry. Always used the smaller coils with my S/T when going after Gold Jewelry but now will give the larger 10" a try going after the deeper lower tones my smaller coils are missing.

Made a chart with the depth results, All of these gold jewelry finds hit on the lowest of three tones. The smaller non-gold piece to the left hit the middle tone and with ease, Two way signal in fact a strong signal.

However, These air test are with the preset sens and can get greater depth but then it shifts into a one tone machine when the Sens is increased. Prefer using the three tone setup with the S/T when going after gold jewelry, Even nickel hits on the lowest tone when using the three tone feature.

Thanks for your patience, Just now made time to check the audio.

HH, Paul
