Tejon vs Vaquero in depth.

David

New member
I know the Tejon is more expensive, about 3/4 or .78 of a pound heavier (2.98-2.2=.78 lb.), and has 2 disc. controls. BUT between the Tejon (at 17 kHz) and the Vaquero (at 14 kHz), with the same size coils, how much more depth does the Tejon have I would like to know??

Does someone know either exactly or approximately. Very small and marginal or substantial??

Thank you.

I dunno. I've heard the Vaquero is slightly lagging behind the Tejon, in terms of depth.
But it is said the difference is splitting hairs and in practice, there isn't enough difference to matter...

It is also said that the Tejon will have a taste for trash, over the Vaquero, due to it's frequency...

But these are hearsay. I'll be interested to learn how others comment.

All I know is that the Vaquero has the same circuit as the Tejon, but does not have the same gain, thus a smoother running detector. I have a Tejon now and have had a Vaquero. If you can be patient with the Tejon and tolerate the gain it does go deeper, but it has a different language to learn over the Vaquero. The Tejon starts its gain at the point of the Vaquero "Super Tuned" You just don't have to turn down the threshhold to pinpoint on it. Hope this helps and I'm sure others will add...........MO

Tejon has some 1/2 to slightly over 1 inch advantage on coin sized object over Vaquero. There are substantial differences in sound qualities of both detectors.

I Have all three HOT Tesoro detectors.
Before thinking of Tejon vs Vaquero performances You should think about Your grounds and how You like to hunt.
In heavy mineralised grounds Tejon suffers a lot, why?
IMHO:
Mineralised grounds:
1) Not so fast autotune if not in pinpoint mode (it has two different autotune speed);
2) Too much gain on coil, You cannot drive in foggy days with headlights on;

Vaquero has a faster autotune and not all that power (I repeat, power is not useful in high mineralised grounds).

Not mineralised grounds:
Tejon threshold is very chatter, so if You like to search in all metal and check with alt. discr. it could be a little tiring;

So, in general speaking we could say that Tejon has more power (ergo more depth) but only You know about Your grounds and your searching methods.
I love my Tejon, but when I hunt in hot grounds it remains at home.
Hope it helps.
Ale
