Tejon users?

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
I don't see much talk on the Tejon, are there many users? I have the Cibola and was kicking around the idea of adding the GB mod or upgrading to the Tejon. What are your thoughts and comments?

I too have a new cibola, and looked into the gb mod.

But I hate voiding my warranty. I also have not really tried the freshwater yet, to see how much th is needed. I live in mn, ground is very good here. Not really mineralized that bad. At least where I live.

It would be up in the iron range.

How do you fell about the warranty?

I have mild ground, so I don't really need the GB. But I find that I often forgot to GB my F5 so I'm fine with preset settings. That's why I ordered a Cibola :)

2 totally different machines they don't call the Tejon the beast for nothing :detecting: once gotten used too it will be the go to machine runs 12 volts and punches it out in to the ground separates well and is deep and hits hard on good targets a very good machine. the Tejon can take some getting used to but well worth the effort.

Hi Larry,
I enjoy answers and commits on all the detector forms. I have a Tejon now sense 2005. Been detecting sense 1980.
Now that said, the Cibola was designed for competition hunts { I think }. It is fast and quick, that's good. The Tejon Was made for relics. Coins and things was next, not fast and quick
You should go a little slower with your swing. Like the old TR's you don't miss anything. I use the 5X10 elliptical coil most of time.Remember, don't push your good name with Tesoro.

Love my Tejon...Yesterday I found 4 very old Trade Tokens and one wheat in an area loaded with iron...Its ability to sniff through iron is awesome and it will detect coin size items a lot deeper than I normally like to dig. With the dual discrimination, there are so many different ways to dial in this machine and it has now won the place as my "Go To" machine. I also have the 5.75 "Widescan" coil but have yet to use it. May try to break it out this weekend.

Larry, didn't you adjust the trimmer and gain some depth? I was kinda hanging on that post and saving for a Cibola.

Larry,
My thoughts about using the two and why I still have both detectors.
Although both detectors run very quiet in discriminate mode, the Cibola runs a little quieter and is lighter. The 3.6 x 18 inch cleansweep and the 12 x 10 coil are both better balanced on the Tejon and make the Cibola pretty nose heavy. Tejon is nearly an inch or so deeper in most conditions I've encountered and I did the ground balance mod to my Cibola just to make sure. Both are sensitive to small targets (such as thin chains). The Tejon's dual discriminators can be set to ID as well as a three tone detector does and if you want you can thumb the first discriminator to get a better idea of target conductivity.

One place I give an edge to the Cibola with manual ground balance mod is over the gravel parking lots where the gravel is all hot rock or cinders. Cibola is more forgiving on the GB setting. I'm slightly tweeking the Tejon GB every few swings to keep it tuned to the rocks.

One thing I don't like on the Tejon is the retune speed in pinpoint. It's a bit too fast for me. I have to speed up the sweep over the target to get good size and depth indications and stay ahead of the pinpoint retuning to the target.

Since I picked up a F75LTD, Tejon has been wearing the 3.6 x 18 cleansweep almost exclusively. In that set up, the Tejon is my soccer field sideline and goal area sweeper and still gets decent depth. Also use the Tejon and cleansweep on bigger tot lots so they can be covered fairly quickly. The narrow end of the cleansweep can get closer to the metal posts than many other combinations of detectors and coils that I have. Tejon will get the work in areas that I know are high EMI where the F75LTD has to be set up carefully to quiet it down. For me it takes less time to grab the Tejon and put the standard or the 5.75 inch concentric coil on it than it does to step through the optimization set up with the F75 for those few areas; and the Tejon does not give away that much in performance.

I hang on to the Cibola because it is light, effective, fun and makes the perfect beginner trainer when someone new wants to just come along. It also got me my first silver and gold so I am a little attached to it too. Tejon with the cleansweep ... well it sweeps up, literally.
Cheers,
tvr

Yep, sure did slingshot. I bought it used and the GB was not adjusted for my ground, I don't know if it was factory set or adjusted for someone else's ground but I looked up Monte's instructions for adjusting the internal trimmer and that made a big difference. As tvr said, the Cibola is a fun to use detector....... with some serious punch. I think the GB Mod would fine tune it though and a easy project for me to do. Although the Tejon looks like a nice machine, it is hard for me to justify the added expense, I suppose if a good buy comes my way, I would have to give it a try though.

Thanks all for the comments, I guess I'm trying to justify the extra bucks for the Tejon, it sure looks like it has many possibilities.

better get that little coil on cowtownkid and let us know what you think?

It is already loaded in my bag and ready for tomorrow. Will hit the heavily laden iron sites again and give it a whirl. Also taking along my Silver Sabre with CleanSweep just in case I hit the beach areas.

way to go :detecting: wont bias your hunt so will wait for a report :bouncy:

Great comments everyone. I use a Cibola with the ground balance mod and I'm very happy with the performance I get. Goes plenty deep. I had Keith Southern do the GB mod. That guy knows a lot about metal detecting. A real pleasure to talk to.

I used the 5.75 for about an 2hrs yesterday at a site that is heavily infested with iron...I found using the coil...There was really not any drop in performance, depth or target response over my 9X8 monolithic coil. Just as I could guess digging a fishing weight or shotgunshell with the large coil...So I could with the WideScan coil. The tones and responses sounded exactly the same. Ground Balancing with the smaller coil was a breeze whereas if I put the CleanSweep on my Tejon, getting a proper ground balance can be tricky. My CleanSweep on the Tejon is finicky when setting Threshold, it tends to drift and the unit needs several minutes to warm up before the threshold will stabilize. The 5.75 did, of course provide much better seperation in this iron laden site, and I ended up with a few nice buttons for the day and a nice copper lid with some kind of intricate pattern that was probaly use on a container at the kitchen table. It is about the size of a half-dollar. Yesterday, No coins unfortunately, but this site has been hit hard and heavy for the past 2 months. There is so much ground to cover out from the main structure, that I eventually but the 9X8 coil back on. I believe the 5.75 coil will see a lot of duty once the lake fills back up and I have to move to the areas that are loaded with pull-tabs and bottle caps. After yesterday, I could see its abilities of seperation as a lot of the old iron, nails, flakes etc are laying on the ground and you can watch as the coil pops and cracks on the small iron. I put a quarter on the ground, a small rock over the quarter and a large piece of thin iron that completely covered the quarter about an inch above, and the Tejon hit the quarter with a very clear, strong signal at least 6". I was impressed. This old 1890's farm site has been 15ft. under water for the last 54 years, and we have pulled a lot of nice items from it. There are several similar sites to hunt at this lake and I will pack along the 5.75 to hunt the immediate areas around the structures.

I wish I had more interesting finds to report, but it just didn't happen for me yesterday. My buddy, diggler, also a member of this forum, did find a huge mens 14k wedding band using his Golden Umax with the 5-pin CleanSweep. He found it in an area about 250 yards off what is usually the normal shoreline under 15ft. of water. This dang ring will easily slip off of my thumb!

Yep, diggler found a nice one yesterday...I dialed my Tejon in above "Screw Cap" and my machine still screamed at my when passing over this monster!

I use one and have done well with it. Dug bullets @12 inches. Deepest was a scabbard tip @18 inches. Ground balance is a snap one you get the hang of it.

cowtownkid great report from the iron site on the 5.75 DD coil thanks am sure it will help others and myself most impressive thing you mentioned was the depth and sniffing ability's that little coil can get got to be happy with that.

hope you get to use it some more:)

its been a transition for me getting used to such a small coil but have found it very well worth the effort.

nice ring there as well got to love those Tesoros what ever the set up

good luck out there on some more goodies sounds like a sweet spot.
