Tejon Standard coil

New member
Hi,I would like to know why the standard coil that comes with the Tejon only signals within the center coil and not the outside coil first. I that is the way it is to work, then why should there be a 5.75 concentric coil? Can someone answer that question?

The magnetic field is roughly in the shape of a cone, with point going down into the earth (on going up as well). Both coil windings (transmit and recieve) are in the outer ring of the coil.

Small coils give you a smaller pattern with a "tighter" center allowing you to work between the trash much easier. You lose a little depth but they are killer in trashy areas. The small coils also minimize masking.

Are you saying that there is no signal from the edge or beyond your coil when you're near a metal fence or other metal object? If so, that's the first one I've heard of.

Is that diagram really correct ?
IMO, effectiveness would not be so narrowly defined.

My factory stock concentric coils most definitely trigger outwards from the coil's edge, on a horizontal plane
for a distance at least 1/2 the diameter of the coil, when used in a sweep motion.
And they do pinpoint quite well, when I bring my sweep to a more refined pattern.

I personally consider the pattern to be more of a bowl shape, with the DD of my 3 x 18 clean sweep coil being shallower.

Pls note I have never attempted anything resembling scientific, or precision testing.

I've seen several technical diagrams that show the concentric to be more bowl shaped than cone shaped but tapering down towards a narrow bottom and similar on the DDs only elongated in the front to rear dimension.
And I'm not aware of any coil that doesn't pick up some signal from the edges. Small ones just don't reach as far and therefore are quite useful in playgrounds around the equipment.

When I had my White's MXT, always used the 4x6 DD elongated coil. I could easily go within 2 inches of any metal swing post and pick up coins.
I can not duplicate this with any other detector I owned using a DD coil. Just thinking, wondering if it had something to do with
the MXT retuning very fast.

I use the 4X6 on my MXT the same way with great results. I think it's more in the size and design of the 4X6 than the fast retune. All my tesoros retune as fast or faster than the MXT, but I've never been able to get quite as close to metal poles and fences, regardless of which coil was mounted. My two bits.

The only Tesoro that could get close to steel is the Tigershark.
When I locate a target with the TS, I put my stainless steel scoop right on the coils edge and dig in. The coil does not cause the detector to sound off.
Loved this feature.

This is what I mean. I only get signal on targets whe past under the center coil, like if I was pinpointing! I this wrong?
