Tejon owner again!!

Well-known member
Hey guys I am giving the Tejon a second chance the first one I owned just seemed a little over whelming to me , but after doing some studying and reading here I believe I didn't put enough time in it and didn't give my 110% to learning it. I also done this with a AT-Pro and gave it a second chance and absolutely fell in love with it's operation!! So the old saying is definitely true give your machine a chance and learn what it's telling you!! I am curious as to what your guy's favorite coils are for it. I have medium to heavy minerals in my soil so I'm thinking widescans are probably my best route. Also if you guys got any pointers feel free to share. Thanks (88junior) Morgan

That is great junior! You may be able to show some Tesoro fans a trick. The Tejon will get it done in your soil.Start with smaller DD coils only.Work with the 5.75 DD,and the 10x5 elliptical. In that type soil i would stay away from concentric coils. You will ground balance with the smaller DD's.There will be some good tips showing up.There is lots of information in the archive, search Tejon.Gary's detecting.com has good information.England has some bad ground and they love the Tejon. They even have a special Tejon over there.A Tejon pro.Keep us updated.

Hello junior,
I think if you give the Tejon some time you will really like it, I got my Tejon about a year and half ago and I took right to it not that I am that good with it, but it brought the fun back in detecting for me. Here in WV I am using the stock 9x8 concentric and I have the 5.75 concentric, both work pretty good but the 9x8 is my pick of the litter.

I think the Tejon will handle your soil, but I can't say which coils will do you the best job.

You may want to look into how to power ground balance it.

Good luck and keep us updated as to how you are doing.

Ron in WV

Hi Morgan, hope all is well down your way. I found that the stock 9x8 coil worked very well in my ground, the Tejon is a fantastic detector.

The Tejon gets a little bad rap in minerialized soil. But this is really true for all detectors.Concentric coils are never suggested for harsh ground. You want to have a small footprint coil to cut the signal into the ground.Concentic coils are better for good ground because of the big footprint of a concentric. In harsh ground You will be better off with a smaller DD.

I have been thinking of getting another one myself. I did take the time to learn it, but thought I would "upgrade" to a more expensive model. The Tejon is the only detector I have regreted selling and am seriously considering another one. Congrats on your new detector. In Massachusetts I loved the stock coil, so I would play with that first and then maybe try a wide scan or if you can afford it, get the wide scan and compare. Have fun

John (Ma) luckily I have a buddy that has the 5x10 and 12x10 dd coils to try out on it he uses them on his Vaquero he's on this forum goes by smokey63 I think. He's a great guy and we try to get out hunt together when we can. I believe he's going to be a little interested in checking out this Tejon and comparing it to his Vaquero. SkiWhiz I may be giving you a call to try and help me figure this Tejon out I got your # programmed in my cell : )

The Tejon is powerful. But with power you get squirrly operation. The Tejon has a fast retune all metal mode, and a slow retune all metal mode.It is much easier to pull the trigger back to the fast all metal retune mode to ground balance the Tejon.Note:I don't think the manual explains this.A fast retune detector can ground balance easier than a slow retune speed detector. This is what is truly so awesome about the Tejon. Two all metal modes, and two separate disc modes makes for a very versatile detector. And the Tejon is surely known for the deep department also. The Tejon is no doubt listed in the power house detector section.I would like to see a Tejon built the size of the Vaquero to operate on one 9v.Slower retune speeds can get better depth and sensitivity to targets. This is were the mystery behind the outlaws ability to pick up small jewelry items at 10khz freq.Retune speed plays a big part just as freq of the detector. Also you can quickly check your ground balance on the fly with the Tejon by simply pulling the trigger back and listen to the fast all metal mode threshold and quickly bob the coil then let the trigger go back to the disc mode without missing a beat.

Thanks for tips on ground balancing SpiritRelic very informative!!

Thanks Steve!!

Here's another question which of the two sets of headphones is better on the Tejon Gray Ghost that both sides of them have volume controls and I also have a set of Jolly Rogers, out these two sets which would you choose? Thanks

Any more i just use gummy jvc ear buds. They hold up good even in the woods.I mounted a koss volume control on all three of my Tesoro detectors.I have tried the big phones, and i find that they are just so uncomfortable. The volume controls jump so loud that it kills my ears with the Tejon.I have the Jolly Roger ultimate's and the volume can not be turned down enough for me in one side ear. With ear buds i can hear animals in wooded areas. With ear buds i can hear people in the park.Ear buds are easier for me to pack and carry.Ear buds don't make you sweat in the summer.Ear buds allow me to hear faint signals well also.Ear buds can be a problem in higher noise areas such as the beach or next to a busy road. Then i will choose the big phones.

I will post this link for any Tesoro owner that may think about volume control and ear buds.I love this set up.Now when i go to far off remote sites,i can just put two pairs of headphones in my front pocket and leave the the heavy equipment at home.I put my ear buds under my shirt. It does take practice to get used to ear buds but if you do,you will rarely use big phones again i would bet.The cords on the jvc hold up real well. They are cheap too.

Thanks for the video I may try to get me a set up like that for headphones, I know it wold be a lot cooler on me during summer!! By the way SpiritRelic I subscribed to your YouTube channel!

I love my Tejon! It's my go to detector.
