Tejon Issue

JHM

Member
I have two .58 cal bullets buried in the yard. They have been there for 2 years. With the discriminator set at foil, I get no signal on these items. Yesterday I found the same type of bullet 6 inches deep and it would give a good signal with the disc far above the tab setting. It sounded like it was laying on top of the ground. My question is will the difference in these two settings cut my depth by this much (30%)? That seems like a lot. I have a Vaquero and have not seen this issue with it. I'm wondering if the Tejon needs a tuneup.

im not sure i follow you. you should not lose 30% on any setting as far as i know. actually if i understand what you are saying you should gain some depth. how deep are the 2 bullets buried in your yard?? the more you disc out the less depth you have. so if your disc was at foil your machine should go a little deeper than if it were set at tab. the further you turn disc toward the right the more you disc out so the less depth you will have. my vaquero i had was an impressive machine, i did like the drop in 9 volt battery with plenty of power. the tejon i have now seems to find the smaller gold alot easier and its deeper. let me know if i understand what you are saying.

The bullets in the yard are at 8 and 10 inches deep. I realize that more disc equals less depth but I didn't think it would be that much. I get more depth with higher disc settings using the vaquero. At lower settings the tejon wins.

I don't know if this will help..............But.......

Even after two years the ground will not be undisturbed.

The buried target can be harder to detect for many reasons.

HH,

could be the ground matrix differing one place to another. are you saying that in your "garden" the Vaq will read the targets but the Tejon will not at the same discrimination setting? On the Tejon where are the dual discrimination setting/

I'm thinking it's my ground. If I go above the foil setting, I can't detect a bullet 8 inches deep in my yard. But the other day I detected a bullet 6 at inches with the disc set nearly wide open. The Vaquero will discriminate a lot cleaner and with it set at the tab setting it doesn't effect depth but it's not as deep as the Tejon. I went back today with the Tejon and found some more deep bullets that the disc would not cut out. I am having very different results in the field than I'm having at home. So I'm thinking my ground and the fact that there is no halo on the 2 year old bullets is what I'm seeing. I checked the Tejon with an air test and I lose about 3 inches from zero disc to max disc which is no big deal. So I don't think I've got a problem. Normally I'm not that concerned about depth that much, but when relic hunting in plowed fields and soggy lowlands depth can be an issue. Thanks for the reply!

in any area that has been hunted sometime a little extra depth can make a difference. Have you tried using all metal? I realize that doing that means digging more junk but I have done it in bad ground in heavily hunted CW areas and found some nice targets.

I believe it fact that the the ground has been disturbed where the bullets were buried and the ground around them had not is what was causing the problem. I have seen this before and forgot about it . Evidently some detectors struggle with this more than others. It had me not trusting the machine. If it had been plowed ground where all the ground had been disturbed I don't think I would have had these results. The discrimination issue had me puzzled. It just goes to show backyard test are not a true indicator of detector's performance.I really do like the tejon and I've got a new (10 by 12) coil coming today. Can't wait to try it out.
