Tejon Ground adjust issue:shrug:

Took the Tejon out yesterday to try a new location out but couldn't get it to GB at all, on the downward push the threshold would go silent so I would keep adjusting to the - but no change even after I turned almost completely a full turn slowly and I was keeping the coil as flat as possible. the threshold will not stay at a continuous tone sometimes it will just drop out completely. it use to GB pretty easy and have the constant tone up and down could the switch be bad ? I tried three different coils but no difference . My ground is not highly mineralized here in the area of north Texas where I live but I do thing ground balancing is important . Should I just send it in to Tesoro ?

You wrote "on the downward push the threshold would go silent so I would keep adjusting to the -" I think you are turning the GB knob the wrong way, if the threshold goes silent as coil is on downward stroke, the ground balance need more + adjustment. Just my honest assumption.

If you are familiar with and know how to ground balance properly already in which it sounds like you do, try a different location and see what happens. Also refer to the manual and adjust the nob as though it was a new detector. But definatly try a different location prior to sending it in, maybe you'll be able to troubleshoot.

I tried that John I went to three locations even went out in the middle of a field in the country today where there is no EMI possibilities present and still no change . I have used many manually GB machines and usually have no problems

Yep you are right but I meant to push the + key instead of the minus key big fingers I thanks for keeping me straight

well tried it another way as I have been doing the gb by just pulling the switch back like I was told was a good way of balancing the machine , but I tried it by just switching into all metal which I have not done before. Not sure why! Ground balanced very quickly I also did something that I read somewhere and that was turning the gb knob 5 turns to the clockwise and then 2 and1/2 turns back which is suppose to put it at a neutral point I read and then switched to all metal mode and it worked . I feel very Dumb!

The Tejon is a bugger to GB compared to the other Tesoros. Power balancing it is easier for me.

every place I have hunted in Texas and Oklahoma were a lot nicer than most of the sites I hunt 'out west.' The newer Tesoro's with a shorter-turn GB control seem to be a bit touchier to adjust and making a guess then checking will often result in a too negative or too positive GB setting. You can make a GB adjustment by toggling into the Pinpoint function, but I prefer to switch into the All Metal mode; then adjust for a proper slight audio hum Threshold setting; then start with the search coil about 6" off-the-ground and begin the GB procedure.

Just move the search coil from about 6" down to about 1" from the ground and lift the coil back up, doing this bobbing method kind of briskly. While bobbing the coil work the GB control, cautiously, and make it as close to 'spot-on' as possible. Don't start with the coil too far away from the ground as there's no need to, and don't move it too slowly as auto-tune can override the audio response. If you have a 'spot-on' Ground Balance in All Metal, you can search in the All Metal mode easier and use of the pinpoint function will be close to 'normal.'

I prefer to use Tesoro models with manual GB, and I also hunt mainly in the motion-based, silent-search Discriminate mode. Therefore, I have always preferred to 'Power Balance' all my Tesoro's in the Discriminate mode for peak performance as most were designed with a somewhat positive offset for the Disc. mode to the All Metal GB setting. Peak GB will provide the best response and depth of detection, especially on higher-conductive targets.

For now, however, since you seem to be having some issues with the All Metal mode adjustment, I'd suggest you just start in All Metal, follow the suggestions, and master getting that down so you can make it quickly at any site you arrive at. If I have confused you, or if I could be of help, feel welcome to shoot me an e-mail.

Thanks Monte and you have not confused me . I have owned a Tejon before as well as other manualy GB machines before and never had a problem with them the other such as the Bandito II was the one I enjoyed the most as it was a blast to use . will try he power balance too

Barry, the ground balance can be a bugger sometimes. Turn your sensitivity down to about 4-5 and ground balance. Problems solved. I had the same problem until I tried this on advice from someone else.

Yep you are right found that out today took it back to the place I went and followed all the advice given and worked fine . first target was a 38 special complete round at 9 inches "been there Awhile""" and then two keys about a foot apart then quiet for a while and bam good tone and dug down about 8 inches and scratched a 1919 S wheat  But she worked flawlessly today on the short time I got to go . Thanks everyone for all the Advice

I've noticed that the issue of ground balancing comes up fairly often. For me, on my manual GB detectors, I've found it helpful to turn the threshold higher than I run with it while detecting. I find the extra volume helps me find the neutral point more quickly.

I have a Tejon and it does the same thing. The threshold is very unstable and the ground balance wont adjust right. You know what ? I just do the best I can and just start hunting. You know what ? Even an UN Balanced Tejon IS BETTER than most other detectors. That G.B. pod is real touchy. You can cut your sensitivy back and it will help and still almost hunt as deep. Ive owned other detctors like the bandido II like you mentioned and know what you are saying. Even if its not perfectly balanced , it will work pretty damn well anyway. I have all sorts of machines F75 , Vaquero , and a bunch others but would be never trade the Tejon off. I love it warts and all.
