Tejon for Gold Prospecting?

I am headed out west in the spring, to do some prospecting with my nephew. I will be using my backup detector but I want to take a detector for him to use as well. I have a couple Tejons, that are both very nice machines. Will a Tejon be productive as say a Lobo Supertraq in prospecting old dried up streambeds and such? I am considering the Lobo....but dont want to spend the money if the Tejon will get the job done for him. Thanks!

I don't have one, but I would think so it runs 18khz and it has a hot circuit. HHH.

You could, but it is not Ideal. It is a 17.5 khz machine and if you get the 10" elliptical coil on it, it will work fine. However, coming out west you'll need to check your ground balance often while you are hunting. The ground changes all the time.

I don't have one, but I would think so....

Thanks, I appreciate your help Hank. It is very difficult to get an honest reply on his forum, unless you post about the $1.25 in change you found on the first outing with the new compadre.....then everybody chimes in. I have never understood why it's like that in here...and maybe never will.

Just in case you want to know. Not many people have used a Tejon. Even fewer people have used both the Tejon and Lobo Supertraq. So people who could give an honest comparison between the two are far and few between. On the other hand, a lot of people have used a Compadre.:)

Give Rusty at Tesoro a call. I bet you he can fill your head full of good information about those two detectors.

Correct. At $160 it's easy to get a Compadre-but I would really have to save for a Tejon. Then, when you get the thing it's hard to believe that such an inexpensive detector can do what it does. Now I imagine everyone's sick of the hype but it's not just the Compadre. My Silver umax I got almost 10 years ago SLAMS on coins and my Royal Sabre amazes me with it's notch capabilities. IN MY DREAMS, I already know what I'd do if I had the Tejon-first disc. at iron nail reject and second disc. at the point where tabs break up. And I know, IN MY DREAMS where I'd use the Vaq if I had one. And just for the record, I wouldn't hesitate using the Compadre for nugget hunting. And if it wasn't for the Royal Sabre, I woulda gotten a Golden Umax instead of the Silver. Which reminds me-I haven't checked my lottery numbers.:crylol:

The Tejon's frequency is right up there with a number of machines that are supposed to be good for gold. With the right coil and checking the GB as mentioned in my opinion it should be very serviceable. While I haven't done any prospecting with a detector, I know several people that have. You will need a lot of patience and persistence as gold isn't always easy to find, but sometimes a good find comes quickly so go for it.

I only ask about the Tejon...because thats what I have on hand. I have a golden Umax but i dont believe it would be well suited in that tough ground....and especially not for the purpose for gold prospecting....although it works great when searching parks for coins and jewelry!

I have even considered getting him a compadre just because of all of the people who have said that it is such a monster on small gold...but what I am trying to do is send him one of my detectors that I have....so he can learn it and become familiar with it before we get out on the mountain and start hunting. So far I think I am going to pick up an elliptical coil for it so that he will be able to use it specifically for gold hunting. I will be using a 4x6 elliptical on my other detector that I will be using...but it isnt a tesoro. Smaller targets are better seperated with smaller coils....so I know I will be sacrificing some depth...but I am ok with that.

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate the help.

The Tejon is super sensitive to small items and I believe it would do fine on gold especially larger nuggets I have found small #5 buckshot with mine if that tells you something.Later

I have had really good luck with my tejon's ....from coinshooting to jewelry and everything in between. Haven't used them for gold prospecting yet....but I know how sensitive they have been for me, so I think it will work good with the right coil on it.

We will be in heavy mineralized soil, so it's going to be a lot of ground balancing...but I have my fingers crossed that we will at least find some small stuff...although a big nugget would certainly be welcome!
