Tejon day

tab-nabit

Well-known member
Went to a spot me and my buddy had hunted before a few times. We pulled a few Libs in the past and thats what we were mainly after. Well I didn't get any but my buddy got a nice walking half and a big skeleton key. The key was huge, probably close to 6 inches long. Some day it will be my turn, its on my want-2-find list.
Anyway my goods from earlier today - (still cleaning a couple coins and some kind of token which I hope to post later - I know nothing about tokens):

And I found this swinging on our way back to the truck just about on the last swing when I was about to turn the machine off. So I nearly missed swinging over this.

Now that's what I call finds.
Wish I could find a place like that.
Thanks for sharing.

Well the first time we hiked into this site, we thought we was going to an old mining camp. Now we are not sure since we don't find stuff more common to mining camps. Maybe the mining camp is still close by, but we haven't found it yet. This area is a semi-clearing among trees on the side of a small mountain. Below is a stream that dries up in the summer. Along the stream is what looks like burn pits. We know a few miles away is a wildlife refuge that had two towns back in the gold rush days. One of the towns was know for some copper mining, and I'm not sure about the other. All that is left is some graves and remains of some foundations.
Anyway we park at the back of the refuge where an old bridge has been out for some years. We hike off the back of the refuge over one small mountain to the next - the area I was talking about. I usually try and check the dead-end turn-around parking spot. Paid off today with a fresh find.
What brought us to the area was the burn pits. The burn pits are rock lined and mostly overgrown into the landscape. Then the burn pits lead us to the clearing above which I would say is about 50 yards by 150-200 yards. Its actually like several little clearings next to each other to cover this area. The brush has been taking up area along with younger trees.
We find what I think is bits of rusted out cans and other iron objects which mostly is junk. The area is not very trashy.
Beside some nice coin, I found another horse shoe today ( I think my 4th or 5th ) in this area, 1st token in this area, and what looks like some kind of a big hook with a T-handle built on the end of the shank. I gave to hook and horse shoe to my buddy. That big hook was probably nearly a foot and a half long. My buddy dug a nice liberty half and 4 IH plus what looked like what may have been a badge. I told him to try electrolysis (hope I'm right) and see what happens.
Anyway we plan on hitting the area again before the weather turns hot (hopefully in a month), then again probably in the fall. It is a good hike and the older I get - the further it gets.
I'm sure glad the Tesoro has a weight advantage, every little bit helps. Beside the Tejon, I had the Cibola strapped to my pack but didn't swing it today.

I was more than happy with the Tejon today. Actually its one of the reasons - for areas of this type. I was swinging a much heavier unbalanced machine before.

I be going back - soon I hope. This is I think my 6th hunt in the area. From the first one, each has been good. Also good not to finds tabs littered all over this spot.

Great finds Tab!

Sounds like a fun place...

Probably a hay hook you gave to your friend.
They are good for 1 thing!

WOW! Open up the thread and knocked me down.
That is some good finds tab-nabit.

Right now I'm looking into a small college that was
built in 1890 and is now torn down. The owner of the
property is in his 80s and in bad health. (In the hospital
now.) So I dont know if I will ever be able to get permission
but keeping my fingers crossed.

Don't you just love them days when you get a bunch of good ones. Good for you!

:Wow! Those are just awesome finds Tab! I would have been happy with any of those coins. To find all in one day, well , :please: great hunting, Beale.

How are you liking the Tejon for coins? Approximately how deep were those finds? I'd be happy with a day of recoveries like that!
