Tejon coil air test, 9x8 to NEL Snake

WV62

Well-known member
Here is air test results between the 9x8 stock concentric coil and the NEL Snake.

I know this will not help anybody with what they will get as far as depth in anybody's ground.

Yes sir, I did buy one it came in yesterday. I had this on my mind and I just had to give it a try.

I haven't hunted with it yet, but I did take it out in the yard and did a ground balance and put a couple of coins on the ground just to see if all was working. Of course the coins were on top of the ground, but I was still reading them with a pretty high coil hold over.

I think it is a keeper and my just stay on the stick full time.

yep gotta go with the gut feeling and they are nice coils in the trash for sure.

mine is on F19 so not as deep as on the Tejon but does well at picking coins out for sure.

sure you will have some fun with it :bouncy:

WV62, Thank you for your input. RiverRat has told me that this coil worked great on his modded LST on the Thames. Just good to hear a confirmation. Going to order one for my LST :)

NEL snake is which same size for CORS?

OK cool the tiny 3.5x5.5 if I remember correctly. Wow that's some crazy depth with that size coil!!

The NEL Snake is 3.75 x 6.75 inches.

The air test numbers are for the Tesoro Tejon only, I have a NEL Snake for my F75 and it is air testing about the same as the 5" round on that machine. Just didn't want anybody to think you could go get a NEL Snake for any other brand of detector and get the same results. So for other brands I would suggest trying to find somebody that has tried one and see what they think of the coil on their brand of machine. F75 and F19 is not crazy deep but good the the trash.

That is what I did, but couldn't find anybody that had tried one on a Tejon so I bought it with no idea what it would do, but I am pleasantly surprised.

I am looking at that cool for my 4 pin machines, Vaquero and Cibola. I'm thinking it will be close to that on the Vaquero. The Tejon seems deeper in most tests I've seen but even 2" less than your numbers is impressive for that size coil!!

I found some air test numbers from my first Tejon and the coils I had then, so I added what I had to the new chart. I was missing the numbers for the 5.75 concentric for the nickel and quarter and nickel, dime and quarter for the 5.75 WS. If anybody that has either of those coils and a Tejon could air test it and post the numbers here, I would appreciate the info.

Thanks Ron in WV

Not sure I can or should post the dealers name or link.

So here is my email address, rwcapron@suddenlink.net

Send me and email and I will send you a link to the dealer.

But for the NEL snake I just done a internet search and visited a few dealer sites and picket one and ordered it, and in about 3 days it was here.

Would this be a better coil than the 5.75 concentric for super iron infested sites? I'm i Central Virginia and the ground is not highly mineralized here. I love to hunt in heavy iron around Colonial period homesites and am still researching which coil will be the best for my Tejon.

I looked at NEL's website, the Snake is a DD coil. That would give it a huge advantage in my dirty dirt, my 5.75 Tesoro widescan coil equals the 9x8 concentric.

Steve,

That was my take on the 5.75 WS when I had my first Tejon, for me here in WV both of the 5.75's were giving me right at the same depth as the 9x8. Now I may be wrong but I always thought the wide scan coil is a DD. But I wouldn't bet a wheat penny on that.

I did know the NEL snake coil was listed as a DD. So if there is a difference in a WS coil to a DD that may explain why that little snake coil is giving some pretty good air test numbers over the 9x8. One thing you will notice if you look back at my air test numbers is that the NEL snake is better on coins and not as good on gold as the Tesoro coils are.

So if you were a coin hunter the NEL snake may be the best choice and if you are going for the gold you may want to stay with the Tesoro coils.

So far I have only had the Tejon out with the NEL snake for about 2 hours of hunting, and I didn't notice any problems with the little coil, but also can't say it was bring dead ground back to life either.

It's all good data. I'm pretty sure Tesoro's "Widescan" coil is the same as everyone else's DD coils, using two D shaped coils creating the slice pattern.

I was very disappointed when I received my 11x8 RSD. It barely, was maybe a hair deeper air testing it against the 9x8 stock concentric. But when I got out in my test garden, it blew the concentric away. My Cibola came with a 5.75 Widescan and the stock 9x8, I also was amazed how bad the 9x8 was in my dirty dirt. I have two 9x8 (one off my Vaquero), so unless both 9x8 coils are bad, there we are. Sooo I got a 11x8 for the Silver uMax with 8" stock concentric, now I don't mind taking it out for a spin every once in a while.
