When I lay a nickel on the ground I get a Perfect solid signal using my Classic. When I turn the Disc right where a nickel is rejected it IS rejected. So far so good.Now...when I put the same nickel in a hole about 6-7 inches I still get a great audio response. Now for the Fun part. While the nickel is in the hole I can rotate the Disc to Max and still get a good DIG signal. Why isn't the nickel rejected at the MAX Disc in the hole but it IS rejected Out of the hole? What gives?

It sounds like something else is in the hole too.

When I scan the hole there are no more signals.I think I will put the nickel back in the hole and put the dirt back in hole and rescan.
It sure is a mystery to me right now.I know this area is full of hot rocks and they could be adding to the problem. The biggest mystery is while the nickel is IN the hole the signal remains a Max disc. The nickel is rejected OUT of the whole at nickel reject where it ought to be.

Hi RonK

I think your problem is when the nicklel is placed at the bottom of a hole that deep...... it is throwing off the ground balance of your classic and giving a false signal over the hole and nickel, therefore it can't be disc'ed out. Try finding a naturally buried nickel and try same settings and I would bet it would disc. out. Freshly buried coins that are deep will never respond like a naturally buried coin.

I figured it Might have something to do with the Ground balance. There is nothing in the dirt I removed from the hole. But there are a few magnetic hot rocks in my area that are also giving partially good signals.Once I get it all figured out I'll post the Real cause.

Does your Classic have Mr. Bills's Mods?...If not, the preset ground balance may be off...I was amazed at the improved performance of my Classic II SL once I put the Ground Balance and Threshold pots on the outside...The stability and depth increased greatly...

HH,

I have been using this same detector for over 15 years and know it very well and I can honestly say the detector works Great! I think it's just the area I am in.I am going to see if I can find some ground that's a little different from where I'm at and test it there. We had a bad drought this past summer because of the triple digit temps and very little rain. My ground is bone dry and no moisture at all.The dirt is just like powder and quite a few hot rocks mixed in.Maybe I'll fill the hole with water and let it soak for awhile and see if it makes any kind of change.

Over dry ground can wreak havoc with a detector...My Sunray probe will not work in powdery ground at all sometimes...
