TDI Vs. Minelab sd2100v2

NVmar

New member
Hi, I'm coming across a good deal on a SD2100V2, but I really want a TDI. The guy wants $1200 for the Minelab.

My question is the following, price differences aside, is the SD2100 as deep as a TDI? What do you guys think? I'm aware of the iron discrimination on the TDI, but I plan digging all targets. I will mainly be using it for detecting gold on Nevada desert/washes, so the mineralization environment is moderate.

Are the coils interchangeable with the gpx?

I need your advice soon before some one else snatches it.

Thanks

Personally I have owned a GP Extreme, a 3000 and a 4000. I have sold them and am getting a TDI. If you really want a TDI, then hang out for it. I believe it to be a better machine.

Thank you for your reply, Panther, but I'm looking for guidance. I know the TDI is newer tech, but the 2100 remains a very strong alternative. Can I ask you why you think the TDI is better. The 2100 has a good coil selection, so performance could be enhanced. I've also seen mods that may make the 2100 competitive with the GPX...

Stock wise, how much better/worse in depth are these two units alike? which one has better performance with the hot rocks (which is my other main concern, more so than handling mineralization)?...

I would greatly appreciate some feedback, I can't seem to find much info regarding the contrasts of these two units, which is surprising since the 2100 has been around for a long time.

Everything being equal, the depth will be about the same.

A lot depends on the soil & the size of the target. Just too many variables to be able to answer a broad question like that.

The TDI will handle the poor ground, and hot rocks a lot better. The TDI handles electrical interference a lot better.

Thank you. I've done some reading, and I'm finding that after all these years since its release, the SD is one exceptional machine. Both detectors are very capable and both will find gold deep.

The american tdi's bombed out in australia and are waiting for the reports to come out on the new timing set-up for the aussie version as most 2100 and 2200's have been modded by link technologies and are getting exceptional depth which would out perform the tdi on most stuff except for the smaller nuggetts. the tdi though is far more user friendly and not as noisy as the modded versions are noisier and take a lot more proffessionalism to get the max out of them

I hate to burst your bubble, but the TDI was never flopped in the OZ market. The only problems the TDI had in OZ was that the Ground Balance needed a fine adjustment to get the mineralization taken care of. There is no timing changes to the TDI Pro OZ version. You should read the field reports by BT down in the TDI Classroom Forum. The changes for the TDI Pro where a volume control, fine GB adjustment, more aggressive filtering which is 4 caps that were changed, and the OZ version gets a 12" Mono coil instead of the 12" Dual Field coil here in the US. With out the GB on the TDI Pro is about 5% or less on depth from the other PI detector. The TDI s are much better with RF interference than any of the most popular PI's. The TDI Pro OZ is doing very well down under. The TDI will also find much smaller gold at depth than most other PI and is very capable, and the TDI will use any of the 3rd party coils for a ML and the Jimmy coil and digger coils as well. There are a ton of home brew coils for the TDI, and anyone can make a coil for the TDI. For a first PI the TDI Pro is a very good choice and you can use the TDI for relic, coins in city parks, on the beach, and gold prospecting. Just try a ML in the city, the RF will kill you..

Thank you guys. I have been learning much in addition to reading the other related topics in the forum. Still, from the comments, I'm not sure what to think about the minelab's handling of background interference.

How far do other detectors have to be from an SD in order for the minelab to work properly? Also, can people carry a cellphone without it effecting the SDs?

You will also have to buy a number of add-ons for the 2100, like voltage regulator and sound enhenced and Li-ion battery!!! Don

Don,

I'm reading that in order to get the stock SD up to par with the other minelabs (primarily the GPX), the owner does need to purchase a smaller mono coil (for smaller targets), sound booster, and the coiltek pocket rocket... (that's another $600+!)

Well gentlemen,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you. I was able to speak with the seller regarding the item and explained to him that I would need additional purchases to make the unit more competitive.

He was selling the unit without key items (like the smaller stock coil) that deserved to have been included for his asking price. Anyways, I have appreciated your feedback and hope you will provide me with additional guidance in the future.

Again, thank you
