TDI on the beach videos

Lovely stuff. The Brits gave Ireland hell - and in return, you Irish turned their rough tongue - English - into the language of the angels.

Happy Easter and God rest the souls of that Easter long ago.

Talking of giving others hell........i don't think your country can be too proud of its achievements in that arena. What language do you speak........ah yes, some form of simplified ENGLISH,your mother tongue lol.:ukflag:

Hey Neil, happy Easter. My comments about the videos were inspired by how much I enjoyed listening to Ringmoney's narration. It reminded me how much I love the glorious speech you hear so much of in Ireland. My thought went further, reflecting on how the English conqured Ireland and how English largely supplanted Gaelic as the language of the people - and in the process it was molded by the Irish into what is - to my ear, the most harmoneous and beautiful English of them all.

Funny thing about English.

It's the original "open source" language. It escaped your tiny island nation when you conqured Wales in the 1200's. After that it spread to the whole of the British isles by conquest. Next came colonies (the most famous of which was lost through ministerial folly). Later came Empire which devolved into Commonwealth.

This led to the usual process of language change and differentiation.

The post WWII ascendency of English as the single universal language of trade and international cooperation has been boosted by popular culture media such as pop songs and films.

The internet era has accelerated this process.

Now linguists recognize and study "world englishes". English belongs to the world. It has gone viral!

Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry on "world Englishes"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Englishes

I especially like the part about "Schneider's Dynamic Model of Postcolonial Englishes"

I love it when Brits whinge about North American English. They can't seem to understand that English has escaped - the English don't own it or control it.

NIce vid! Congrads on the gold! And love the Maddog.. Great hunting partner..

RingM,

I'm not positive, but I think Neil was taking a swipe at my country (the former North American colonies) and airing his unlearned opinion of American English.

The US was blessed with a huge influx of Irish and we're the better for it.

I don't have a drop of Irish - or English blood, just Alsatian, French Canadian and native American, but I spent 8 years in elementary school taught mostly by Irish nuns - Texas was full of them in the 1950's.

They did their bit to teach us heathens and slipped in a bit of the "old sod" now and then. I still remember "Oh Katie dear and did you hear - the news that's goin' round - the shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground..."

Happy Easter to you too lytle.Yes,we are a tiny island nation, but look at the history we have, including the English language........it makes metal detecting so much more interesting than just coinshooting for modern coins at the local park.:thumbup:Actually that is slightly unfair is'nt it,you do find some old coins over there, some of the oldest even have the head of the King of England on them don't they?
Read the last sentence that Ringmoney posted,if that is improving on the English language,i'll stick with the original form.
I was'nt taking a swipe at your country at all........you have jumped to the wrong conclusion, maybe like me as it looked as though you were taking a swipe at mine.

Fair enough

But if I remember correctly from the time I spent in Newcastle there are a lot of varieties of English in England as well

OK everybody - I started this mess trying to express my delight in hearing english from Ireland.

Nice videos. I have a TDI with a 14" coil myself - wish I had a cute dog to go with it and a nice beach to hunt on.

Apologies to all for screwing up a perfectly pleasant thread and thanks to Ringmoney for sharing the videos.

Erin go bragh and God Save the Queen - I have to put the roast lamb on for our Easter dinner!

Again - apologies all around.

You are correct.....there are many dialects and different ways of saying the same thing,Newcastle is a great example.
I too apologise for getting off track.......I sincerely hope you have a good Easter.

Thanks for the pm Rick......i could not respond as your mailbox is full.I hope you forgive me for the way I reacted and we can share our detecting experiences in the future through this fantastic forum.
All the very best,
Neil.

get the cover for your TDI, I need one of those for mine? Just getting started with mine and trying to learn machine. Did you GB your machine? Why do I see some just turn off GB with gain wide open and hunt that way and set on all and not low? Will you lose any gold rings if you do GB? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to understand. Good luck to you. John

The cover came with the TDI when I bought it used, so don't know where it came from. The TDI came from the States so I guess the cover is from the States also. I hunt mostly with GB off as I have yet to find a beach where GB on is required, I do set the conductivity switch to low and not all just because it is a lot quitter. With GB on, not only are you going to loose depth but you will loose some gold, some rings will be in the same range as your ground and thus will be balanced out.
