Taveling with the Excal 2

Hey people. I'm traveling to Cape Cod Mass this week on a plane, usually drive. Haven't flown with the machine. Going on Jet Blue. Should I disassemble the entire machine in the box, or ask if they'll let me bring it on the plane. I have a carrying case from my Beach Hunter ID that's padded, but I wouldn't trust they might rough it up under the plane. Suggestions?? Des in Buffalo

I don't know how Excal's come apart BUT I don't trust ANYONE handling my machine. My 2

Hi Des, I take mine apart. I have made a 3 pc travel shaft's for all my detectors. I sometimes pack them with the scoop & put them under. Most of the time I carry on. Let me know how you do at the Cape. I'm taking the RV there next month .Leaving 8/9. Mr Bill gave me alot of info on the area, & so did many other members. Good luck

I made a 3 piece travel shaft too. Gobble, no trouble with TSA for carrying on? I rarely check bags anymore, but have been a little hesitant to take my detector because I don't want a confrontation with TSA....

I took my leche shovel in the case and the TSA agent pulled it out of the sheath a SMALL bit and said ohh a shovel!!! I kept my BIG MOUTH SHUT!!!!! Will NEVER make that mistake again!! LOL if he would have seen the whole thing I would have been NAILED!!

Des:

I have always put mine under the plane because I pack the Excal tube in through my scoop bucket as a protection like a cage surrounding the excal. That said, I have always been extremely afraid I will have trouble having it stolen from the bag. I still knock on wood as I am flying with it. NOW for the SCARY PART. Put mine under the plane going to Carribean and wouldn't you know that coming back from islands someone either threw my bag OR ran over it with one of the tractors pulling luggage. OUT OF 3 PIECES OF LUGGAGE, HOW IN THE HECK DOES THE AIRLINE MANAGE TO HIT THE BAGGAGE WITH THE EXCAL IN IT????????????. THANK GOD only damage to baggage (severe) and the protection from the bucket in which I sit the Excal body in protected it from possibly getting destroyed. YES!!!!! American Airlines purchased new luggage for me. Anywhew....now that said...... I plan on taking mine on board as well. Have not tried it yet and hope no problems. Great time and topic to bring up because I always thought before everyone posted to your question that the airlines ONLY allowed in under the plane.

I talked to Jet Blue and they said it has to be no more then 2 ft in length to carry on, so I will pack it in the box it came in. Let everyone know how I do. Grew up on the Cape, but wasn't into detecting those first 32 years, What a bummer. A bit more gold there then Buffalo!! Des in Buffalo

Looks like I am going to carry my Excal and Whites dual field on the plane with me this year as I head off to the Caribbean on August 26th for 8 days. CAN"T WAIT. A vacation well deserved. Thank you Des for making the phone call to Jet Blue as I am going to contact American Airlines to make sure they allow me on the plane with the Excal. I am still astonished as to how bad my luggage was destroyed last year as I received my luggage in Miami. I saw my luggage (Large Black suitcase) and it had a dent on three sides about the size of a couch pillow. I thought "Oh my GOD!" My detector is trashed!!!!!!

I fly often with my Excall. Take it apart and carry on the control pod coil and headphones. Put the rod in your check in luggage. I also put the manual in my carry on just in case they are training someone that may question what you have. Hopefully you will not have any problems. HH :minelab:

i bought an old Samsonite hard case medium sized piece of luggage from the goodwill store for 4 dollars and that is my safe house for my machines--its old and no body messes with it. It has great protective features and i pack all my snorkeling equipment as well which helps keeping it from getting damaged from the give a shit baggage handlers. This was a tip from a forum member which saved me 150 dollars from buying a Pelican case.HH
