Target tone on the Whites 5900/di SL

MarkCZ

Well-known member
Okay, I picked up my Whites 5900/di pro sl yesterday so today I got the batteries out for it, cleaned it up and put it together and did a few minutes test.
Way back I started out with a Whites 5000/D ser 2 and I remember the target tone going up and down on different targets (higher and lower).

Now my questions is, what can I expect out of the 5900 sl as far as tone?
Single tone?
variable tone?
multi tone?
Right now I've got about five minutes testing the machine and it seems to be a single tone,? (Just wanting to make sure its working right)

Also, doing some air testing it seems to like a bit of aggressive sweep speed, any tips on sweep speed?

Thanks!

Mark

They are one tone.

MarkCZ,

All whites detectors (5000's, 6000's) from the last twenty years or so have only single tone. The ones that have multi-tone are the M6, DFX, Spectra V3i and others. You mentioned (remembered) that you had in the past a 5000/D ser.2 with the sound going up and down on different targets. You might have being using the push button for pinpointing which gives you a variable tone when scanning over the target, which in turn is a All-Metal mode. When scanning over targets (non-pinpointing) in disc. mode, you'll get chirps, sputters or whatever you want to call it, but it is still one tone even though it sounds different. Being detecting since '74 and I use to detect with 5000/D, 5000/D ser. 2, 6000/D ser. 2. Presently I have an XL Pro and a 6000 Di Professional (blue box) and all have one tone.

When you begin, make sure you properly ground balance, this is the most critical point to achieve. Personally I don't like to swing very fast, I like to slow my sweep speed down a bit, but try to slow down and see if that works too.

If you don't have the manual, try going to the White's website and you can get and download the 5900/Di Pro SL manual and print it later.

Good Luck and let us know what you find,

Well, by my stereo headphones only working in one ear, I take it that the detector's headphone circuit (jack) is wired for mono (two conductor, not three), correct?
I do have the hard copy of the OEM manual but it doesn't have ANY specifications in it at all about anything.

the headphones i use on my 5900 have individual volume knobs on each ear cup...... for what ever reason i find that i have to have one side turned up all the way and the other side turned down all the way to get both ear pieces to work and at that point i have no volume control so they are pretty loud..... as far as multi tone -- i did see a foriegn made video of a 3 tone mod that was done to a 5900.... but its really not necessary once you get used to the machine....i swing kinda slow and short in trashy areas, and faster and wide in cleaner areas...... its a great machine .. you will love it...

I just had my 5900 out today for fun in the test garden, and yes, mine requires a much faster sweep/swing speed on buried targets. I have to go to nearly a weed whacker swing on even a 3-4" target. Until I hear different, I am going to assume that these 5900 machines with the 950 coil is going to have to have a fast swing speed on underground targets. I can much slower on surface coins. I have to wonder, if say an 8-9" deep coin, would need a golf swing speed to get a chirp. Mine acts just like yours does friend, right or wrong.

I did dig lots of good stuff when that was the only detector I had, but I couldn't imagine swinging it that fast for hours on end in the field. If I slow mine down, I don't read my year old targets buried at 3-4". I hope we both get an answer for the normal or abnormality of this feature. A smaller coil would go slower, but surely other hunters with the 5900 using the 950 stock coil, can attest that the swing speed has to be much faster, and can't be slowed down on buried treasure. martin

Swing Speed...I swing mine at what I call a "comfortable speed"...kinda natural. Excellent results.

950 Coil...I have one, somewhere. I use the 6" almost exclusively for general coinshooting, although I also have a snooper & an 8".

Test Garden...Probably just me, but I've never been able to obtain decisive results from anything I buried...Maybe I just don't stay in one place long enough!

Sig Bal...As Monte & others have preached, THIS is the key to depth. I run mine wide open most of the time. I didn't really believe it made that much difference until the day I was working an old athletic field & kept gettin' quarter signals but no quarters. Turns out, it was a reclaimed landfill, with about 8-10" of topsoil. I backed the S/B to the factory preset, pushed the Disc up to knock out tabs, & went about my business. Shortly, I recovered 20+ quarters & about that many dimes...all at about 2" - 5"...& no more junk!

Tones...One is correct. Sometimes it sounds like 2-3, but that's usually the difference in the targets &/or depths. If it sounds good & gives a good meter reading in at least one direction, TWICE, dig it.

I keep telling myself I NEED a new machine, but then I get into a "worked-out" school yard & pull some Mercs out from 6-9" and...:wiggle:

Cheers, DR

Well I do think the 5900 is one of the best ever made!Although it is true that they came from the factory single tone, I know there is at least three out there with tone id on them, several years back someone started modifying them(and the 6000) for tones,I do not know how many ended up being modified, but if you ask here under that section, sure someone will know more about it,Mr Bill where are you!?
