If you have the 70/705 then you can size a target with the prospecting mode, by whipping the coil over the target and listening to how wide the signal is. I find that it's easiest with the 6in concentric coil, but it can be done with the other coils. It's not as easy to hear though.
I also find that by listening to the strength of the VCO pinpoint on shallow targets also gives you a good idea on the size of a target.
You can also feel around a target by listening to it's response as well as feeling around with the pinpoint to some degree. Lifting your coil helps. Actually, if you lift your coil more than six inches and you are still getting a strong signal, then it's not a coin. watching the depth meter can be of some help too, but if can often be fooled by having a second target in the field at the same time. That's why it's often gives the wrong depth.
There are other little things to watch out for, but experience will point them out to you.
