what i want to know is when you have located your target with your particular machine, what do you use to get the little blighter out the ground ? i've tried both flat tip and phillips screwdrivers with little success with either, where i operate digging plugs is not an option . park people tend to get cranky and i want to stay on their good side.underground coins and stones all sound and feel the same to me. i have studied several methods for recovery .all that is said is the screwdriver/probe should be 8 inches in length .is this total length or metal shaft length.i'm sure someone as always will point me in the right direction blowfly [the little v is a bonzer mates]:detecting:

First, you don't want to use flat tip or Philips screwdrivers since you are going to damage valuable coins/artifacts. Get a long blade (10" NOT including the handle) tapered screwdriver and have the tip rounded.

Second, you get the signal. Third, you get the target depth. Fourth, you pinpoint minimizing the signal until you can hardly move the coil meaning that your target is dead center. Fifth, If you have a spider coil with the center section open, using the depth as a guide and if it's shallow (0-4 inches), gently insert the probe into the ground into the center of the coil's open ring. Chances are that on your first try you'll touch the, hopefully, coin. You'll recognize the feel from a rock or stone. If you have touched the coin, gently remove the probe and insert it again and again until you go past the edge of the coin. Once you do this you can lever out the coin. For other objects you'll have to experiment.

They also have curved tip probes on E bay so you can get under the coins and pull them out.

hope this helps

Do a search on Ebay for the Magna-Tuff non-metal coin probe. It is great!

Hay Blowfly,

Take an old fiberglass fishing pole. Cut off about
10" or a foot and make a handle on the bigger end
and use that.

It will not damage a coin. It will last fairly long.
doesn't cost anything and all you need to replace
it is an old piece of fishing rod and some wood
for a handle.

If you use a screw driver, don't touch the coin with.
it. Get under it and pop it out of the ground.

Other wise youu will have scratches on your coins.

HH,

blowfly, here is a thread that I started and Golden Silver had some pictures of the fiberglass probes and a lot of other good ideas from other folks.

The fiberglass rod sounds like the best solution but if you need a probe that is a little stronger to take you through harder ground here's what I made mine out of. I went to Ace Hardware and for two bucks I think, I bought a replacement brass rod that attaches your older style toilet flush float to the flush valve sharpened one end and since it had threads on both ends I threaded the other end to an old screwdriver handle.

I personally have not used these tools but there are a lot of good reviews.

Blowfly1967 , I use a fine stainless steel probe I made from a tip section of a automobile radio antenna.
I have attached an old golf ball for a handle, it works fine for me as a probe.
After pinpointing with the coil, I gently probe with my stainless probe to see where the coin is laying...
Now knowing where it is, and how deep it is I push a large flat tipped
screw driver UNDER the coin ~ (which still has my 6" probe sticking in the ground above it,like a golf tee.)
Make sure the flat screw driver is some where about a 1/2" below the coin, and lever it to the surface,
the turf should tear open, and the coin with luck will be in the emerging clod of soil !!!
I only use this method when searching for our spendable "GOLDIES."

Similar action to below...
Although the soil looks to be easier flowing than our Aussie drought hardened stuff eh !

Serious goodies get dug far more carefully !!!

Personally I don't go near the park turfs until they are really dampened by winter rains.

It's nearly impossible to not see a brown patch occur after cutting plugs in dry turf...
Park rangers see RED when they spot damaged turf...
It's a TURN OFF to those park boys!

I recall a story told to me by a detecting buddy... This was here in Australia.

His mate was retreiving a coin, when to his side he saw a pair of large boots appear.
He decided not to take notice, and kept cutting his shallow plug.
Then he used his Lesche knife to hinge open his plug, re scanned the plug and went on
to flip his coin out from dirt that was under the ground.
Standing up, he said hello to the person; ( a park ranger .)
That ranger said " good job! Keep going, and good luck to you.
I wish all detector operators operated like you do."
The guy was blown away !

I think it's a case of being sincere.

I feel that I am a benefit to the park.

I supply a service and I am proud

of what I do.

I will not hide anything from park

employees or police men.

I go out of my way to talk to them

and see how things are going with them.

I've never had anything but good

relations with them.

HH,

Had a small run in friday evening at a ballfield, police stopped,, asked what I was doing and told them,, I said Ididnt see any no tresspassing s igns,, and they siad,, well we dont want any big holes in te field,, I asked them to go around te field and look for any holes I left,, and then showed them a pocketfull of tabs and foil i picked up along the way,, we talked for a bit,, I assured them I was leaving no holes and they finnaly said,, well I guess its ok,, after that I lost interest in teh hunt,, around here you wave a metal detector and people assume your a domestic terroist up to no good,, meanwhile i;m doing a dance to advoid broken beer bottles and pop bottles laying everywhere,, sometimes I just dont understand it,, I;m 53 years old,, and its not like I;m out there with a backhoe trying to reteive a 1990 penny,,, guess I gotta learn to adjust with the times,, yesterday went to a small city park,, a lot of people were having picnics I guess for memorial day,, I just felt uncomfortable searching,, always felt like I had eyes buring through my back,,, again,, doing no damage to anything,, but I was thinking,, its not going to be long before the police show up,,, so I packed it in for the day,, found a few clad pieces,,its been a lousy weekend,, found only 45 coins,, nothing great,, all clad and memorials,, the depths I;m finding them at is still amazing to me,, I;d swear it had to be silver for as deep as it is,,

I understand. I always move away from people. If there gets to be too many people I move to another site.
