Puzzled. Using my Vaquero with the 5 3/4" and the stock concentric coil.

Three times this week this has happened to me.

Been practicing using all metal mode then switching to disc mode on every signal I get. Seems to be more productive than just running in disc mode all the time.
But...

On three occations I've got a good repeatable signal in every direction, even with the disc turned to max. So obviously, I start digging. Recover a coin, but still get a slight signal in every direction . Keep digging, now I'm down 12 to 14" still got a good signal. Keep digging until I can't get any deeper without a #2 shovel. Could this be a ghost signal or maybe something very large and very deep?

I got a tar get like that in a grave yard In an area where they put chairs and have ceromonies and have had for as long as I can remember.

I dug up a pair of reading glasses that I use to this day. I kept getting a signal and digging. It kept getting louder at about 1.5' I found I uncovered a head stone with brass decorations! Glad I didn't dig the old boy up!

Hope you figure it out

Hi markg

I've been thinking about your post. Maby I can add some input here. I hope this helps.

If the signal is weak, I assume that you can disc it out. Where is the break point on the descreminator? A rusty nail can give a supprising signal sometimes and may have a ghost signal projected from one end or the other. A nail can sound like two targets that are farther apart than the nail is long. What I'm saying is that a nail that is off to the side may be causing these signals.

I believe that I've encountered This problem with Just about every MD I've ever owned and some I didn't own.

There have been many, many times I wouldn't dig any farther because I didn't want to make too big of a mess or the ground was too hard or I didn't have a good digger, or I was just out of " wanting to do it ".

But on the many occassions that I have continued to the end, many times it's to the side, other times it disapopears all togather. Some times it's rust that crumbles when you dig it. And then there the ones that are big and deep. As a professional surveyor I have recovered large pipes standing on end and used for property corners as deep as 4' with what started as a small signal. Truck or even tractor axels used as property corners, just as deep. I've located Man holes more than 6' deep. I'm not saying that VLF metal detectors can go that deep but I'll bet it plays he*# with their ground ballance. And I have dug water lines, gas lines, telephone conduit and under ground electrical wireing.

You may not figure it out every time, but if you continue to the end you can at least make it go away.

Many times it's best to cut your losses and go to the next target, but the lurer of that little signal can be hard to resist.

And that was a true story about the grave yard, by the way.

I use a Cibola which is very much like a Vaquero but it doesn't have ground ballance. I have a 5.75 concentric coil also.

I love mine. If it was softer and warmer I think I would sleep with it.:detecting:
