Target masking -2nd air test

OK guys, thanks for all your input. I tried the air test again and for some strange reason came up with different results. First off, let me explain that the type of nail I was using is a 3 1/2 " spike type of nail with a slightly flaired top that tapers to a flat point, somewhat similar to an old fashioned cut nail. The first time I had to set the iron disc up pretty high, almost to nickel, before it would disc out the iron. The second time I was able to set the disc to just slightly above, or nearly on, the word iron and it disced out the nail. Also, I held the nail on top off the quarter, as I did in the first test. No air in between. On this second test it successfully picked up the quarter. I double checked that it was still discing out the nail by removing the quarter and checking only the nail again, and it was still discing out the nail. Holding both together I could still pick up the quarter at approx 6" With the sens at about 1 o'clock. Mind you, I had also just come in from trying the GB outdoors for the first time. No digging yet, just learning the procedure and doing some surface scanning to get used to the process. Is it conceivable that the machine has to get "broken in" as it were before the circuity becomes properly adjusted?

Don't think there's any "broken in" involved, but proper ground balance is important. With a bit of practice, you'll be ground balancing in just a few seconds. Don't worry about the sound(s) you hear while RAISING the coil. It's the rise or lowering of the sound when the coil nears the ground on the down stroke that is important. You want it to be neutral or to rise just a small bit (known as positive GB). Also don't be concerned about any squeals while you are turning the knob, which, if you're close to balanced just takes SMALL increments to get it there. Hope this helps.
